I"m no mechanic, but after observing four engine changes(not all failures) I
believe it is faster and easier to take them out the bottom. Mike Glover
did it that way and it took about the same amount of time as when
Winterfeldt took it out of the top working in his driveway.

I have always thought that taking the engine out the bottom would make more
sense too. But from looking at the underside, I don't see how you would get
the clearance for the engine to drop between the transmission and the front
frame rail. My question is what all has to be removed to get the engine to
drop out from underneath? Is there a procedure documented anywhere?

Dave:

You unbolt the engine sub-frame and roll the engine out.

What all is attached to the engine sub-frame? Does that include everything
up front? Like the suspension, steering gear etc?

I will have to take a closer look this weekend to see if I can figure it out.

OK. I can see where that would work if you removed the transaxle first. I
have never read the procedure in the service manual (hopefully I wont have
to any time soon) so I was thinking that you would leave the transaxle and
just remove the engine. I sure would love to see how someone does this in a
driveway....
