I have never confirmed this and am aware of kits to specifically convert
empty freon tanks to airtanks. I had read somewhere that this setup can be
very dangerous. This style tank was never designed to be repeated inflated
and deflated so over time the metal work hardens and becomes brittle and
then??? Again, I only read this somewhere but it was enough to scare me
into paying the 9.95 at the local Menards for an air tank specifically
designed for such a purpose.

Another alternative is to go to an airconditioner service company and see if
they are disposing of an empty freon tank. They are usually free for the
asking. These are steel, painted green, and have been used for years as
portable air tanks. To make a portable air tank, you can buy kits that
consist of a fitting, a hose and a gauge at about any auto parts store. I
made one about 15 years ago and its still in use. If I have a low tire I
can
fill the tank at the compressor in my garage and carry the tank to the car
and fill the tire.
They make a small tank, I believe 20 pound size, that would seem to be
about
the ideal size to be plumbed into the GMC air system.
