EMI and CB Radio

Greetings from Southern California !!

I’m finally getting around to addressing a long standing issue - electromagnetic interference such that my CB radio is unusuable.

I’m quite certain that it’s emitting from my HEI (Paterson(works great) ) distributor.

I’ve purchased some lightweight Faraday Fabric and my simple attempts of shielding yield no difference.

I’m inviting any and all commentary from anyone with a solution or an idea towards a solution.

Thank you all for the valuable information shared here and thank you in advance for any ideas on this particular issue.

Yes - there is a power filter on its 12V supply. Perhaps not sized properly ?
 
You may need to swap out your plug wires for some better-shielded ones, as well as different spark plugs. Is the noise a constant whine, or does it have popping? From what I've read, a constant whine points towards the alternator and/or a bad ground and a whine with popping sounds is more likely igntion-related - plug wires. Make sure your cb antenna has a good ground to it.
 
If it truly is ignition related, look into making some better wires. I've dealt with this company before, and they've been great. Here is one quality wire that has distributed resistance and a wound stainless conductor.

If you really want to narrow down the source with no guessing games, try taking off your alternator belt and spinning your alternator with a drill/socket. If you hear exactly the same interference with the engine off, you may need to look at the alternator instead of the ignition.

Of course, you may introduce a new type of interference with the power tool, but you can still do the experiment with the ignition running and the alternator stationary, or the alternator spinning with the engine off. It should give you some clues.

So back in my high school and college days I was a Technician at a CB shop (remember the 70's!) Then I owned a commercial two-way radio (Police, Fire, Taxi etc) business for 40 years, so I've had a bit of experience here.

If you hear a "whine" that varies with engine RPM, then you are looking at alternator "whine". This is caused by a faulty alternator or battery with a weak cell. You might get rid of it with a choke and capacitor on the power lines, but its better to fix the cause. I've had many an argument with mechanics on this one.

If you hear a "Hash" noise that does not change with the engine RPM, but does change with the dash fan speed, then you are likely hearing RF noise generated by the dash HVAC fan motor (even the rear suspension compressor or windshield fans motors can create this noise). This noise is introduced through the antenna and no amount of filtering on the power line will fix it... you must suppress it at the source. GM installed a Feed-Through capacitor on the power lead of the dash HVAC fan motor to suppress this, but that capacitor is likely dried out, or gone completely 50 years later. Feed-through capacitors are not as common now as they used to be back in the days of AM radio, and tend to be rather expensive. If this is the noise you are experiencing, try installing several points ignition "condensers" (another name for capacitors) from the fan motor power wire to the ground (case) of the motor.

If you hear a "Tick-tick-tick" that varies with engine RPM then you are hearing ignition system noise. This noise is also introduced through the antenna and must be suppressed at the source. If you have a "Noise Blanker" switch on your CB, turning it ON should reduce this interference. If your ignition wires are old, they should be replaced as that is the major cause of this noise. If your ignition wires are not "resistor" wires, then you need to change out your ignition wire to radio interference suppression resistor wires (this isn't a dragster). There may also be a "condenser" on the positive side of the ignition coil to ground if you have points ignition that can be replaced. If you have HEI ignition there is a condenser that could be faulty inside the distributor beside the ignition module.

Noise Blanker (NB) is a circuit that tries to get rid of ignition noise by receiving the same ignition noise on a different RF frequency and inverting it, then adding it to the audio path so that it cancels out the noise.

Noise Limiter (NL or ANL) simply limits or clamps the pulses of the audio noise so that the noise is not louder than the desired audio. Its usually just a couple of diodes in parallel in each polarity direction.

It's a mystery !!

The CB radio is wired to the house batteries - and the house 12V system is entirely separate from the chassis system. (Lithium Iron). Disconnected from the isolater, disconnected from the combiner, and disconnected from the boost.

There is a "filter" on the power line to the CB Radio. I'm assuming that it's a condensor/capicitor of some flavor.

The antenna on the roof appears to be a factory installation. Plenty of spray foam around the (interior) base. It may or may not be grounded - there's a plastic ring between it and the roof. But - experimentation with grounding it (the base) and not made no difference. Grounding directly to the battery negative (well - the load side of the Victron shunt).

Suspecting ground loops issues - I wired power and ground to the radio directly from the battery - still plenty of RFI.

Spark plug wires. Plenty of exploration with the conclusion that Dick Patersons are as good as any. (Confirmed with Dick - what a great guy).

Condenser in the distributor - Dick says that there's one in there... I haven't experimented with replacing that little wiring harness.

AND A NEW DISCOVERY - the door open buzzer also introduces RFI !!!

I'm stumped !!

Gonna eat a samwich and see if that fixes anything.

You need to describe the noise you are getting. Refer to my earlier post.
Pull the antenna connector and see if the noise goes away.

The key buzzer of the 70's era just made the horn relay buzz. They are a great example of an early transmitter.

I'll attempt to record the sound tomorrow... other than "loud static" - I don't really have a descriptive description.

It varies slightly (pitch) with RPM.

I pulled the antenna connector - and Voila !! - the noise goes away - as does all reception.

And... I had the opportunity to test it with a different (handheld) CB radio. Identical symptoms. (It was powered via cigarette ighter.)

After another several hours of testing, rewiring, grounding, and a bit of cursing - I'm quite embarassed to report that a simple adjustment of squelch on the CB radio seems to have resolved the issue. Damn.
 
If your CB Radio has an RF Gain knob, try this trick. Open the squelch knob all the way (usually counter-clockwise) so you hear the noise. Then turn the RF Gain knob back until you just can't hear the noise anymore. This adjusts the radio's receiver sensitivity to allow signals through that are stronger than the noise level, but is not an abrupt ON/OFF in operation.
