Electrical relay for AUTO TRAVEL dash light

Does any one have a part number for a replacement electrical relay that
controls the red light on the dash that comes on for 10 seconds or so,
reminding one to set the travel controls to AUTO and then turns the
light off. Mine has packed it in and while it isn't exactly what one
would call an all important item, I would like to keep it all
functional. In the International News Letter, in # 50, mention was made
of one from a seat belt reminder, but only the number was given and that
also is now obsolete.Maybe someone has a relatively new car that has an
idiot light for belts or some other function and one could go to a
dealer and get the # and the item,and hopefully it would work on the
GMC. The old original one (#701215) is a small metal canister,has three
terminals with a delay circuit in it so that after lighting the travel
control for a few seconds it shuts off till next time the ignition is
turned on.It is located up top, behind the instruments. Has anyone
replaced theirs and found an alternate part number that works?

In the the last month or so someone else posted a replacement part
number for the relay that you are looking for. I haven't found it yet,
maybe someone else has it listed. If I find it I will repost.

You jogged my memory JR! I think this is it:

The "Set Power Level to Travel Position" light and buzzer are controlled by
a time-delay relay under the dash and by the multi-function "neutral
safety/backup light" switch down on the column. Our GMCs have an extra
contact which is closed when placed in "Drive", connecting the light, via the
delay relay, to ground. Basically, every time the transmission is placed into
Drive, the light (and buzzer :-(> ) comes on for 10 or 15 seconds.
Any loose/intermittent connection in this circuit may break the circuit,
whereupon the light /buzzer will start the process all over again. A worn or
out-of-adjustment neutral switch is a likely cause. For my part, I ripped out
the buzzer the second day I owned my GMC, but I left the light as a gentle
reminder.
BTW, some people report a problem with the delay relay itself. I recall
reading that it can be replaced by a seat-belt reminder light relay if that's
the case.

Claude:

I searched the 15,000 saved messages I've got and came up dry.
Nothing in the parts interchange book either.

I'd try the usual parts sources,

Alex Sirum, Cinnabar, Zeb Frady, etc, they may have one.

I'm sure you can still get one from GM if you get a parts guy to look up the
old part number (701215) for the new replacement. They were used on a lot of
GM stuff in the '70s.

Newer cars put that function in the body control computer, so that won't
help much.

There should also be a standard cross reference to a Signal Stat replacement
part at your favorite auto parts store.

Signal Stat (Logansport, IN and Juarez, Mexico), is now a part of Federal
Mogul. They' don't appear to have their products on the web. :-(

For what it is worth

GM part number 1726241 has been discontinued and not replaced

Anyone have another number

Thanks guys-Mark, J.R. and Rick for suggestions- I was looking for the
easy way, but unless someone else has a new replacment part number, I'll
just have to go out there and due the foot work.
