Early Model Stainless Trim On Late Model

Good Afternoon

Question for those in the know of body side mouldings.

I have a 78 that I am slowly working on to paint refinish in (hopefully) the not to distant future.

Anyways, no doubt about it the early models with the large stainless trim with the rubber body side moulding affixed inside looks way better than just
the rubber side moulding with or without the faux chrome trim on it, which was originally offered on ours.

Is it doable to install the early model stainless mouldings on the 78? And by doable I mean relatively simple and would look like it belongs.

Anyone?

Jim, the early stainless trim covered the edges of the top and bottom panels. The later coaches had a modified belt line aluminum extrusion with
slots that captured the edges of the top and bottom panels. The differences between the two designs are shown in the 78Z Motorhome Parts Book in
Groups 23.130 & 23.130H

The first design was a hat section and I don't think it would sit flush on the second design beltline extrusion, so you might have to make up the
difference with caulk or gasketing.

Should be plenty of parts coached around. Problem is it is 3 piece. Rubber, stainless, and a center strip of galvanized that the rubber slides on.
The galvanized is what don't make it but possibly could be made or pieced together.

It sounds like it wouldn't exactly work, not to mention procuring a good set of trim from a donor coach.

Or use a commonly available boat rub rail material. Probably not the
cheapest option but certainly the most hearty.

Jim,

Since you have a later coach with the exposed aluminum beltline extrusion, you don't need to do anything besides paint it. The rub rail molding
doesn't do anything - it's too high to protect the coach from car doors. It's just cosmetic. I just painted mine and I think it looks better,
cleaner.

Here's a few visuals concerning my query.

Our 78 Royale was vandalized a few years back, basically the OE striping and the body side moulding were damaged and discoloured.

Shortly after that a truck backed into it and caused the damage you see on the right front.

I fixed the right front damage and refinished the area.

The guys at Applied fixed me up with the parts I needed, which was a new marker light and aluminum body strip (used). I bought a late model rubber
body side moulding kit as well. I planned to put this on but I started to release the early models have that nice stainless trim and it had me
thinking about swappping one over on ours.

Being that the stripes were and moulding were damaged I gave up on the idea of keeping it as an original looking Royale.

I decided to start customizing it somewhat with a added colours and different striping scheme.

As you can see from these pictures I have bonded a set of Flares to the body and removed the striping from the sides as well as the old moulding.

Orange will be a predominant colour on it when I am done, how much of it is not decided upon.

I also have a visor to install and was thinking of adding a front spoiler. I believe there are two fiberglass spoilers available. I'm thinking the
shorter of the two.

Since I'm in it this far I am also considering the hidden latch kit for the front access panels.

That's my 68 Toro I bought in 2005. I bought it as a driver to bomb around in. I decided to restore it in 2010. I went a bit crazy and strip the whole
car down to a shell. I went over every mechanical system in it and refinished it from bare metal up.

As I was restoring it I was searching the WWW for parts and kept seeing "parts may be the same as GMC Motorhome"

GMC Motorhome turned out to be to cool not to have one so....

Thanks Ken,

I can barely commit to finishing my own! I still have things to wrapped up on my 68 nine years after starting it. The reason of course is all the time
I've thrown at the GMC in 7 years of ownership. That's a project that's never finished I'm afraid!
