My 6.0 Onan has had starting problems twice after operating the unit
over dirt. In each case, dirt interfered with the ignition points.
After cleaning the points with my finger, it started with no problem.

1. Is my unit missing a dust cover over the ignition points, as they
are now out in the open??

2. I remember something about a sheet metal air deflector that directs
the cooling airflow horizontially away from the generator. My unit
directs the air straight down and really kicks up the dust. Is the
deflector available and from where?

Yes, there is supposed to be a can that sits over the points.

Ron Tase (tasegmc31) make and sells these deflectors. I have hd
one for a number of years and it really helps to blow the heat away
without stiring up ash and dirt.

I heard that Ron is somewhere in Oklahoma having his engine replaced.
Maybe you can catch him as he rolls thru Dallas!

It sounds like your Onan is missing a dust cover over the points. There
have been posts about an electronic substitute for the points that you'll
want to consider if you're doing major surgery.

My Onan always kicked up a lot of dust and then recirculated it back
through itself. Eventually it got so dusty that the fins got plugged and
cooling was impaired.

I had a leftover piece of 6" galvanized stove pipe that had about the
right curvature so I simply cut a piece and secured it behind the Onan
exhaust. I don't remember the exact detail but I chose the length and bent
some tabs to use the existing screws. It deflects the dust and heat out
from under the coach. This works great and didn't require cutting any
fiberglass as a rigid deflector would have. It hangs lower than anything
else back there but it's just sheet metal which can be easily replaced.

I did a major cleanup on the onan at the same time but it seems to run much
cleaner and cooler now. I've only had it on for about half a season but at
least I don't kick up a dust storm whenever I cross gravel.

Hope this helps

FYI

Alex Sirum has the aluminum Onan deflectors in stock, I was
there last week and he had 6 on the shelf. I had him install
one last summer and I love it. No more kicking up dust under the
coach and it moves all the heat away from the genset rather
than underneath the coach where it just sucks it back in.

At the Petaluma rallly, there was someone there selling a
deflector for
the Onan to provide this function. Does any one know who is
making
these ??

Thanks to all for comments on solving the Onan kicking up dust. I will
call Alex for the deflector. This episode will encourage upgrading the
Onan to electronic ignition.

Thanks to everyone on the net for all of the great information. I am
updating a 78 Royale and all of you have provided greatl information. I
just wish I had the time and the $$$$ to do them all.
