Emery,
You might find that you might be able to get a cable modem sooner then DSL. From
what I understand the distance from the telco offices will keep many from getting
DSL. Of course distance is a problem with cable too. I just know that I kept
calling and calling about both DSL and cable modems and cable won the race around
here. DSL is just starting to become available in selected areas here in SE
Michigan. My son DSL in Ann Arbor last Fall. We got the cable modem last
Spring.

Another possibility:

Still requires a modem for the uplink, but downloads are supposed to fly.

In my area (NY) we have DSL and cable. Cable is about half the price of DSL
and at present moves much faster than DSL. The only concern with cable is
that it is a shared band, and gets slower when more folks are on at the same
time. Check with your local cable company for availability. The speed of
these lines, and the fact they are always on, is great!

Good luck, Tony B.

DirecPC Satellite Internet is super fast for web surfing most of the
time. Just don't expect the same results at all times.

I finally cancelled my $20 per mo. subscription last month after using it
for the last 3 years. It just isn't worth it anymore since their system's
down about 1/2 of the time. My 56k modem is nearly as fast and not nearly
as aggravating.

DirecPC is an ongoing experiment in marketing and services. They have
certainly got a ways to go before it'll be worth the cost.

Consult alt.satellite.direcpc for more information

I'm impatiently awaiting DSL or cable modem web-access here in the Texas
outback. I think our best bet will come from some kind of wireless solution.

Hope this helps
