When rebuilding your engines for todays gasoline, and wanting them to live,
you must follow the tech tips I recommend. Do not use cast iron piston
rings. Today's fuel doesn't have any lubrication, so you will experience
very fast cylinder bore wear and short piston ring life. The use of a
premium cast nioly- ring or a file fit plasma moly ductile ring by Speed
Pro, is recommended. The gasoline -today, because of the alcohol additives,
generates more internal engine heat with very little lubrication. You must
use more piston to wall clearance, valve guide to valve stem clearance and
piston ring end gap. If your piston manufacturer wants .002 piston to wall
clearance use .0025. The ring end gap must be increased by .002 over
recommended end gaps for your cylinder bore size. The valve guides, whether
they are cast iron. ~;s~oli-d bronze or- bronze guide liners, you must run
.0015 to .002 inta~ke valve guide clear-ance and .002 to .0025 on the
exhaust valve guide clearance, if you have any less then these -valve guide
clearances (regardless what your engine builder or machinist tells you), you
will stick the exhaust valves and kill your engine. I recommend a light
knurl using
U.T.P. United Tool Processes knurling equipment for both cas~t iron and
solid bronze valve guides. This allows the guide to hold oil for better
lubrication and a cooler running valve stem. The one biggest failure is
exhaust valve seats, and many machine shops destroy a lot of Oldsmobile
heads trying to install small block Chevrolet hardened exhaust valve seats
in your Olds cylinder heads. The big block heads A - B -C -D -~ -F and H
heads need hardened exhaust seats and I thru 7 and 7A small block heads-
need hardened exhaust seats. The replacement Chevrolet exhaust valve seat
is 7/32 .2187 to 1/4" = .250 thick and this usually will hit the water
jacket in an Oldsmobile cylinder head. Mondello makes 2 -Special Size
Oldsmobile exhaust valve seats which are both 3/16 = .1875 thick. Our part
#1453 is 1.750 O.D. and #2453 is 1.62~ O.D. and these seats will not hit
the water ja~cketst O~r seats are made of a Mar-Tite alloy, which self
lubricates itself for long exhaust valve and seat life. Always-- remember
detonation and pinging isn't always audible but it is a silent killer. If
you follow this story, and do to your engine- and your tune up as I
recommend in this article, your engine will live a longer, happier life.
Mondel 10 performance Products now offers complete distributor rebuilding,
blueprinting and recurving. Good distributor blueprinting is one of the
hardest services to find in the country. We have found through extensive
testing that Pro-Long engine treatment, 40 below radiator coolant additive
and Torco motor oil with MPZ will lower your total engine and oil
temperatures dramatically. If you need jets, metering rods or anything
mentioned in this article contact Mondello Performance Products for your
parts and Technical Information
