This is one of the articles that I received from Joe Mondello when I asked
him for help in working on my 455. And yes he does sell jets and lots of
other parts for the olds 455 that no one else has. Call 1-800-252-2527 for a
copy of Performance products "Technically prepared" a complete line of
oldsmobile V8 engine parts. There might be a slight cost. He has specific
recommendations for the GMC motorhome from torque converters to ignition parts.

Todays Gasoline "A Silent Killer"

Over the past several years I have answered hundreds of questions on "Why my
engine pings, detonates, sticks valves in the valve guides, badly worn
exhaust valve seats, runs ho'1~, and makes less power than it used to."
Well, the answer to the above questions are simple, but involved. I will go
over everYthing step.by step to help you correct all the problems caused by
todays gasoline. The biggest problem is the fuel is. unstable because of
todays additives, gasohol, cornahol, alcohol4 etc. These additives cause
the fuel to oxygenate. When the fuel sets in your gas tank for about 7 to
10 days, it separates and accumulates water, which in turn leans out your
fuel mixture. Ever since the introduction of unleaded fuels, we lost
Tetraethyl lead, which lubricated our upper engine parts. We lost Octane,
which used to eliminate pinging, detonation, upper cylinder head and engine
wear. We now have to go back to square one to correct the problems from
todays unleaded gasolines. The Octane rating at the pump is not what goes
into your gas tank, it is about 1 to 2 Octane less. The use of Stabil fuel
Stabilizer, about 2 oz. per five gallons of fuel and Marvel Mysterys Oil
about 4-6 oz. per 20 gallons of fuel is a good starting point. The total
fuel curve of your engine is very important and involves everything. from
the gas tank to the carburetor. I know most people have never looked at or
checked the condition of the fuel sock in the gas tank to see if it is
plugged up with years of sediment, rust, sludge, etc. The mbst comm~on
reasons of poor fuel delivery, fuel pressure and your engine running lean is
a dirty fuel sock. Steel fuel lines(5/16 and 3/8) get pinched or dented
allowing poor fuel flow to the carburetor. The stock fuel pump, which is
usually worn out but even if it were new, can only hold 2 1/2 to 4 1/2
P.5.1. pressure which is hardly enough when you are trying to run 4500 to
5.000 R.P.M. We recommend a higher pressure, higher volume fuel pump for
todays gasoline. The Mondello HP-960 Mechanical Fuel Pump delivers up to 80
gallons per hour free flow with 8 P.S.I. shut off pressure for a maximum
street & motor home delivery fuel pump (no fuel regulator is necessary). If
you are running a Quadrajet or Holly Carburetor, always remove the paper
fuel filter cartridge from the inlet side of the carburetor. I recommend a
Barry Grant, System One, Moroso, etc., in line free-flowing fuel filter,
not a paper cartridge type. If you are running fuel additives,. lead
substitutes, octane booster, carburetor cleaners, etc., the paper cartridges
will deteriorate from these additives. Today's gasoline is leaning your
fuel mixture between 8 and 10 percent. If you own a GMC Motor Home the 8
to 10 percent leaner mixture is really causing you more problems than a car.
Because of the 15,000 lbs. you are trying to move from point A to point B,
plus the excessive engine heat you are generating in the engine compartment.
The changing of jets and metering rods both primary and secondary are
mandatory especially on Edelbrock and Quadrajet Carburetors. If your
Quadrajet carburetor has a 72 primary jet and a .054 primary metering rod,
you should go up 2 jet sizes (example 74 primary jet and .047 primary
metering rod) to richen your fuel mixture about 5 ~o 8 percent. You should
continue to enrichen your fuel system until all signs of pinging and
detonation are gone.
