Downshifts & Steering

I could use some advice on a couple problems which I need to solve before
our next trip;

=46irst, the transmission won't downshift until the old boy has lugged down
to 35. I'd sure like to be able to kick it down at 40 to 45 by stomping the
gas pedal for a second. I've had the downshift switch replaced, but it
still must be downshifted with the lever above 35. Any suggestions?

Also, we've noticed a resistance point in the steering when turning right.
This occurs only at about the 1:00 position, and seems to be getting more
pronounced. I've been told that I'll most likely have to replace the
steering gear. Before possibly wasting (more) money, can any of you offer
alternative suggestions?

BTW, ours is the old boy, not girl. After all, GMC Jimmy (not Jenny),
hence license plates "SR JAMES". --- (Lots more than 2=A2)

TIA

Dave
