Hello all,
Newbie here. Just bought this 74 glacier. PO Had engine and trans rebuild at 95,000 currently 150000 on the clock. Located in North Dakota . I,ll be
doing a shake down cruise to Maine soon . Thinking two new front tires check all fluids bring tools gas filter and alternator belt and current AAA
membership. what else can i be doing for back up

I would make sure all the tires are less than 6 years old, check all the brakes and take it around the block (150 miles minimum at highway speed) to
see if there any issues like over heating. Unless you are intimately familiar with how it has been maintained.

This is an interesting coach.front end had been modified with body colored matching bumper, rectangular headlights and custom grill. It has a unique
paint job dark blue with white. Ive seen the same paint design (different color scheme) on a coach for sale on the gmc facebook page. Makes me wonder
if it from the same shop.
I believe it spent some time in viginia,indiana and texas before coming to north dakota. Next stop Maine! With any luck. Im looking forward to getting
involved with this community

Check /change all hoses new 50/50 coolant and grease all fittings front and rear If you haven't done it , consider it has not been done.

in Lafayette, IN at one time. Erv Troyer reported sighting it back in 2001.

Welcome to the group, family, cult, asylum.....

As has been said, get hoses and belts inspected and coolant, lubes changed. Coolant does not wear out, but the anti-corrosives get depleted.

Carry a printed copy of the Black (aka GMC Assist) list. That list can also provide stopping places with friendly faces.

You made your way here and that was a very good thing to do. If you ask questions, you will get good answers. Many of the answers may already be
available by searching the archive of this site, but that is often problematic.

Before you do much else, and as you seem to be working this site as the forum. This being the case, please for both yourself and us build a sigfile.
To do this, go to and scroll down. Fill in a real name (we like to know who we are helping), a short about the coach
including major mods and a geographic reference. Then scroll down to update.

Why do you want to do this??
Because you have just collected a couple of thousand brand new old friends...
Your coach is more than just a big new toy. It connects you to an amazing community. You will quickly see that everybody here has an not so hidden
agenda. That agenda is to see to it that you understand and enjoy what this coach can do for you. Yes, it is over forty years old and may have
issues from time to time, but there is help here. (I won't go into that right now.)

If you do not have the full set of documentation, it can all be downloaded from GMCMI.com. Joining is also worth your while.

Now, some immediate help. If the ignition has not been changed to HEI (big distributor with the coil in the cap) consider not changing it, but at the
very least, get a Pertronix 1181LS to replace the points. If you think you want more spark, put an add-on CDI with that. As said, if it is HEI,
carry the full set of parts and know how to change them out. Be sure to check the plug gap as an open plug can take out HEI parts with little notice.


You said you want to run from SD to Maine.....
Could you fill us in on your planned route?
If you plan to go across Canada, you will need a passport to reenter the US. Fuel is also real expensive there, but there is also a good community of
GMCers there if you need support.
If you advise us of your planned route, you can count on some very specific advice that might be truly helpful.

Back to the community...
This is community of helping and supportive people like very few others. The only other that I actually know of is that of the watermen that are my
world. For this reason, I like to paraphase the common welcome there for new owners that arrive here. So,

Most of us will say that a GMC in a state of good repair costs about $30K.
We can buy one already in such a state, or we can spend that putting it in
that state. Many of us chose the latter option.

I define “state of good repair” as available to go anywhere, anytime, with
no more worry than taking the daily driver.

Most of us had adventures on our first trip home, but many rescues have
made it home with fuel being fed from a gas can strapped to the bumper.
Just know and prepare for the potential issues. Forestall obvious safety
hazards—check the brakes carefully, check those fuel lines, check the
heater hoses (especially the long runs back to the water heater), check the
vacuum hoses, check the age of the tires and replace if too old, grease at
all zerks, only fill the fuel tanks half full and get fuel often (in case
the senders leak, which is often the case), change the oil and filter,
check the transmission fluid frequently, replace the air filter, check the
ability of the air system to keep the back at proper ride height. All of
that can be done in a day by someone with a bit of mechanical skill, and
cheaply (unless it needs new tires).

Tires in the back can scrub as much as front tires, and when they blow,
they do just about as much damage. I would not risk outdated tires on the
rear thinking they aren’t as unsafe if they blow compared to front tires.

What Rick says. We know of several coaches on which t-skirts or other body
parts were damaged when rear tires blew while traveling, not to mention the
potential for other problems as a result. In the long run, tires are cheap
insurance. And, you're going to need new ones anyway.

But you WILL enjoy that coach and some of the best people you will ever
meet.

Congrats. is this the coach that was about an hour to 1.5 SW of Fargo??

Anyhow- look me up on the black list. http://www.bdub.net/Black_List/ Jon Roche. I am in MN in St. Cloud, MN. If you are heading east from
North Dakota, chances are you will take I-94 at least to Minneapolis area, at that point deciding how much of Chicago you want to drive through.

I am just west of Minneapolis/ST. Paul, maybe 4-5 minutes off the I-94 interstate Exit 171. St. Cloud/St augusta exit. maybe 3 hours drive from
Fargo. driveway parking available, and if you need anything else, give me a call 612-961-4196 or shoot me an email. Maine will be a good test
and you will get to know that rig pretty well by then.

Yes thats the coach! I am heading your way.planned to get to a hotel in Eau Clair Saturday night after leaving the tire shop in oakes ND.
My cell is 207- 595-3422 im thinking ill check out all the water,sewer system once i get home. Just want the engine to run well, brakes to work and
