I am trying to figure out what to do with my distributor. Thanks to the
GMCnet I now know that I should not be using a Toronado distributor on my
455. I really don't want to spend the $$ for a new/recurved one. It has not
been that long since I upgraded from the points ignition to the HEI. My new
distributor has very few miles on it.
Can anyone on the list tell me what parts I have to change to get the
curves closer to what they should be for the GMC? I know that the vacuum
advance is different. Does someone have the part number or an application
for the correct vacuum advance? I assume that the springs and/or weights
are different too. Any part numbers or suggestions for the correct
springs/weights?
I looked in the parts book and it shows five variations for the complete
distributor assembly (1112893, 1112945, 1103267, 1103299 & 1103309). It
shows three numbers for the vacuum advance (1973609, 1973622, 1973634). The
springs and weights are part of the shaft assembly and the parts book shows
four variations of the shaft assembly (830421, 1893988, 1894423, 1894687).
Can anyone shed some light on what the differences are between all of these
variations?? I am guessing that some numbers are for the 403 and some are
for the California versions. But, unfortunately, there is no application
information in the parts book.
I suspect the vacuum advance should be relatively easy to find if I can
figure out which one is the correct one. But I am not so sure about the
springs and weights. Maybe the ones used on a 454 Chevy truck would be the
same or close?
If I cant find the correct weights and springs maybe I can remove some of
the metal from the weights (in my toro distributor) in order to make the
centrifugal advance less aggressive.
Has anyone had experience modifying the toro distributor for the GMC and,
if so, what where your results??
Any ignition experts out there who would like to share their wisdom?
