The 75-76 manual states "When timing marks are in alignment, number six
is
at T.D.C. to obtain T.D.C. for number one cylinder, slowly rotate
crankshaft one rotation, this will bring the cam mark to the top, number
one
will then be in the firing position. What I did. Number one cylinder
T.D.C.
Camshaft and Crankshaft marks aligned Distributor set to number one
cylinder. Will this not accomplish the same thing?
Frank,
No.1 and No. 6 are at TDC at the same time. However, when the camshaft
marks are lined up, No. 6 is firing. No. 1 is 180 deg out using your
method. A real quick check is to rotate the engine with the valve
covers off, watch the intake valve for No.1 open, then close, just
before it completely closes check the timing mark on the balancer, it
will be coming into alignment with the timing guide. When it is approx
8 deg. BTDC, drop in the distributer with the rotor pointed at the No. 1
terminal. If the valve covers are sealed up & you don't want to remove
them, pull the No. 1 plug and put your finger over the hole. As you are
approaching the TDC firing position, the compression will push your
finger out of the spark plug hole. As soon as you feel this happening,
watch for the timing mark to come into view as stated above. I prefer
dropping the distributer in at the static setting because it centers the
distributer. At least that's the way it works on Chevys, Olds puts the
darned thing in 180 out of whack (for me that is).
