Dipstick tube broke

My oil dipstick tube rusted and broke behind exhaust manifold. I removed manifold and carefully worked on getting the rest of the tube out so that I
could replace it…. Well… I failed miserably! Now what? Does anyone have any suggestions besides pulling everything off the bottom to get oil pan
off.
It is broke off clean with block. 🥴
Any suggestions?

What I have done when faced with that same problem is to use my 2# slide
hammer with a self tapping screw on the business end. Just screwed it into
the remnants of the dip stick tube until tight, then used the slide hammer
to pull the busted part. Ez-Pz.

One way that should work is to get a long bolt that will just slide into the broken stub head first. Then the head of the bolt can be caught on the inside of the tube. Clamp on a vice-grip and hammer up on it.
When you have it part way up you can then slide a larger bolt into the tube and clamp it down with the vice grip and hammer it up to remove the stub.

Ken,
Which side of the block is yours located on looking at the front of the engine, transmission dipstick side or the alternator side? I have been hunting for the oil dipstick ever since I bought my 73’ & cannot find it?
Thanks, Thomas

I've been lucky and haven't had one break off yet. But over the years,
I've heard of removing them out the top AND out the bottom.

Out the bottom's been pretty well covered already ('tho' I haven't seen
anyone suggest using a threading tap into the tube, then pull with vice
grips). Out the bottom isn't as obvious: A straight piece of wire, bent
as appropriate, treaded through the tube and out the oil drain hole. Then
use a piece of tube to drive the broken off piece down the wire to guide it
out the hole.

I've even heard "just drive it through and leave it in the bottom of the
pan if you can't get it to and out of the hole". Probably not a terrible
option, considering that it can't get picked up through the screen.

WE have had to push a hanger wire and poke it through the drain hole then
push the tube through with another tube.

The wire trick out the drain hole was my plan C... Luckily, the #16 self
tapping bolt and a slide hammer did the trick. I am happy to have this job
done and hope I NEVER have to do that again.
Thanks everyone for your help on this. I thought I was going to have to
drop the pan and we all know what a major that is! :)

Kinda funny how solving one problem triggers some thoughts about other
unrelated problems.
When you stop to think about it, taking the oil pan off this engine is
a major p.i.t.a. so one would spend a good deal of time and effort to avoid
that, if at all possible.
But, a cylinder not firing correctly? There are 5 exhaust manifold
bolts and 8 or 9 cylinder head bolts to remove, and you can have the head
on the bench to have a look-see. Looking for a work-around to that might be
a waste of time. "JUST DO IT", is the quickest way, especially because the
head will have to come off anyway. Just a random thought, kinda off the
subject of dip sticks.

Little off the subject of a broken dipstick tube, but this Saturday I stopped at a gas station in Pennsylvania and there was a Harley rider with his
girlfriend on the bitch seat at the pump next to me. While I was filling up with gas, I pulled my oil dipstick out and caught the Harley rider
watching with amazement. I made the mistake of saying that I guess my dipstick is a bit longer than yours. I am grateful that I didn't have to have
my jaw wired shut, but I only spoke the truth.
