Digital Camera

Speaking of digital cameras, I had a chance to get familiar withy
daughter's Sony FC81. What machine! I was able to make copies of the
discs (it uses 3.5" floppies) right in the camera.

Pricey but quality often is!

There are so many cameras that it will make your head swim.

Sony is the ONLY ONE that will write a floppy directly. Not only can you
copy the disks, your computer challenge MAC friends can use the disks
directly also.

OOPs now I should not have said that.

I resemble the MAC folks, but there are lots of adapters for cameras that let
them connect directly with their computers. For flash cards, there are
readers that insert directly into the PC. For folks with a pc card slot,
there are readers for both flash and compact cards, and for those with new
machines with USB (both mac and pc), there are direct input devices that sell
for about $40 that will let you read the flash or compact card directly in.
Thus you are not limited only to the Sony - just my .02. I have a Nikon and
love the pictures, so you have lots to choose from in deciding what to get.

Marlene,
I recently purchased my first digital camera, a Fujifilm MX-2700. I,
too, was looking for a minimal investment without foregoing a lot of
quality. Paid about $230 for the camera, and got additional 8 Meg
SmartMedia memory cards for about $20 each. Good picture quality. Runs
on 4 AA batteries, which last quite awhile between charges (I use NiMH
batteries). Just today I took it out and snapped 48 (640X480) pictures
of a 1980 MGB on one 8 Meg memory card. Didn't have to change
batteries. Brought the camera in and uploaded all pictures to my
computer, then emailed them off to a prospective buyer (of the MG). You
may find comparable quality for less, but after lots of homework, I'm
very satisfied with my selection of the MX-2700. Feature and quality
per dollar, I'd give it a 9+ on a scale of 10.

Marlene--
It's the same old story -- you get what you pay for (sometimes). I Selected
an Olympus D400 with zoom lens. Paid nearly $600. I have 122 shots on one
card (16 MB) in the standard quality 640x480. But what is really important
to me is the quality of the prints and this camera will take 1280 x 960.
This resoution allows me to crop and enlarge the parts of the picture I want
to print. One never knows when a shot becomes priceless and I would hate to
loose it for lack of resolution.

Marlene,
Tough questions. What features are not imprtant to me may be different to
you. I would suggest doing a search on the web for digital cameras using "?
DIGITAL, CAMERA". Also try out WWW.CNET.COM and WWW.ZDTV.COM/freshgear to
see what they have since they are doing alot of coverage on these lately. I
got the SONY FD two years ago when they first came out and boy was it pricey
($700) and not the feature list they have now. I just wanted floppys for
unlimited pictures and no cables.
I guess price is the bigest concern and what can you get for features at
your price range is what I would ask myself. Jim Bounds just got a new one
too. I think more and more these will be mainstream items much sooner than
we think. Do a bit of research first and see whats out there.
Also try www.sony.com or www.cannon.com or even www.digitalcamera.com.
Hope this helps...
