Marlene:

We started out shopping for a digital camara with much the same budget in mind and
soon discoved that what we really wanted just didn't exist in that price range....at
least not yet. We settled on the Sony Mavica and have been very happy with it,
though it was priced much higher than we had in mind to spend! (We gave it to each
other last Xmas, in lieu of any other gifts...)

What we looked for was: 1) ease of use, ie, no extra software to learn 2) high
resolution 3) zoom and flash 4) low price.....and well, ...we got 3 out 4 anyway : )
1) Ease of use: Mavica uses a 3.5 floppy which goes from camara to computer without
software conversion. Just stick the floppy in your drive and open the images in My
Computer by clicking on "(A:)"....or you can also display them in Netscape or
Internet Explorer through "file"-- "open page" -- "(A:)"

2) Resolution: the higher priced Mavica's produce a better quality image than the
lower priced ones...but all do a good job in creating photos for e-mail/web use. Our
FD91 model allows for two settings: Standard and Fine and several modes: Normal,
E-mail, Voice, Bitmap. Image size choices are 1024 x 768 or 640 x 480.
(For comparison, the larger image size will over-fill a 17" monitor screen....)

On "Fine", at the smaller image setting, we can get 12-14 photos on a standard floppy
disk. The larger image size allows 10 photos on a floppy. Compared with a regular
film roll, that may sound low....but you can review your photo via the LCD panal as
soon as you take the picture. If you don't like it, erase it from the floppy and
start over!
Our model also has a feature that allows a short video to be taken; a cute feature,
but not one we use much.

3) Zoom and flash: it has both and will also take a timed shot so I can put myself
in a group photo : )

We have used this camera more than any other in the house .....and we've got lots,
everything from a 35mm with multiple lenses to One Shot Throw-aways...! The really
fun part is playing around with the photos on the computer. Most computers now come
with a photo editor, ie MGI PhotoSuite or such. I happen to like Adobe PhotoShop
which will allow to me easily resize, color, and otherwise manipulate any image.

Hope this info helps....good luck in your quest!

PS: Mavica's save images in JPEG or BMP formats. Be aware that most servers will not
support a .BMP file..they're waaay too huge! (Same with GIF's...they take forever to
open....)
If you do send photos over e-mail, or post them on a web site, save your images as a
.JPEG Your viewers will thank you...!
