Differential whine

The whine you're referring to is caused by the ring & pinion assy.
Used to be when you bought a ring & pinion set they were heat treated &
then broken in on a Torsen machine at the factory, thus the claims of a
"matched set" of gears. In order to cut costs, the break-in process is
not done anymore. Richmond, Zoom etc. sets now come with some fairly
detailed instructions as to proper break-in. Failure to perform this
procedure does result in a whine upon load & coast of the set. This may
no longer be a true statement but it was in effect on the last 3 sets of
diff gears I installed in street rods, the last set being 3 years ago.
