rather than a deterioration of the plastic interface? I have seen =
the edges of a cloudy GMC windshield and it did not appear to be =
delaminated. It would be interesting to see if heat could reverse =
the clouding and we'll be watching for your results."
If it were strictly plastic deteriorating from the sun over time then I
would expect to see it starting in the middle of the windshield more
often.
Typically the clouding starts near the edge of the windshield. There
are exceptions like when the 2 layers of glass do not share
exactly the same shape. The stress of the difference in curve can
cause what is inappropriately named "pressure cracking" of one of
the layers of glass and/or center of glass delamination of the
interlayer.
While air and or water in contact with the interlayer may be partially
responsible for the deterioration/clouding in many cases clearly
(pun intended) the vinyl interlayer is seperating from the glass.
In my past life in autoglass we found that old clouded laminated glass,
when broken, often seperated more easily into monolithic glass in the
area of the clouding.........obviously delaminating.
Although I have never used them, sprays are marketed to coat the
edge of laminated glass, to help prevent exposure of the vinyl to
the elements.
I expect that it is deterioration of the interlayer that helps to cause
the delamination. My experience does not take me to that level of
understanding of the process. What we learned about this we
learned while the material was on the way to the garbage bin.
Monsanto would no doubt have more information but I don't know
that they would be interested in sharing it.
Will the clouding go away if the interlayer can be relaminated? I am
not really holding out much hope for this potential repair. Even if my
windshields had only been clouded, not broken, I still would have
replaced them. Even if the repair works I would expect some
visible traces of the past problem to remain.
Besides with good windshields in place the next round will be my
insurance companies problem
Still might be fun to find out. What have I got to loose other than a
broken, clouded windshield that I was about to throw in the bin and
a few hours that I could spend working on my coach!
Given the additional point of view I think I will tear a part of the
windshield apart to compare the clouded and nonclouded
portions of the interlayer itself. I don't get to play with my glass
tools often anymore.
