Dash options

My dash is to the point where its bothering me. Its cracked, loose and I need to do something about it. The piece that sits over the wheel is the
worst of it. Its literally falling apart in places.

I like the original gauges and all of them work.

What are some of the options out there? I did talk with Mac at Elkhart but he was a busy guy. Im just looking for a better option than what I
currently have. Im not sure if he sells just new fiberglass shell to replace the stock set up, provided the structure behind the plastic is solid.
Macs website is a bit difficult to tell.

Anyone selling a decent used dash?
Duct tape the heck out of it, cover it with astro turf and call it good?

I have a list of other higher priority spendy things I need to address before dropping thousands into the dash.

Any insights are appreciated.

Tape it, strap it, glue it and screw it until it doesn't move and squawk over the road bumps. Then cover it with the short fun fur from the
fabric/sewing store (JoAnn, Hancock, etc.) so your repairs are hidden, and keep looking for the solution that you like while you take care of the
higher priority issues, like stop and go and water/rain resistance. Might cruise past your perfect solution at a yard sale, ya never know.

We can supply you a basic dash new dash, but it will take lot of work to
pull out the old and install the new and do all the cut outs,etc.
I know most wil not go that extra mile to do it.

That's really just the fascia of the instrument panel -- behind the
instruments. Does nothing for the rest of the 40 yo dried out plastic.

I know it looks overwhelming, but I really don't think my approach is as
difficult as fitting one of the fiberglass replacement dashes:

With a little patience, everything sort of falls in place during an ad hoc
design/build. And the result is almost exactly what I wanted.

There is another owner working on some parts with Jeff sirum. I do not
believe he has a dash yet complete, but I think he is working on it.

He stated the other day he was in need of a sample dash to make the mold
from.

I discovered that the structure of the dash appears to be ABS plastic. I bought a flat
sheet of ABS to cut up and was able to make good repairs with that and some ABS glue.

No, sorry, I'd have to disassemble the dash to get pictures. I mostly used the abs sheet pieces to fix broken substructure.

I rebuilt my dash many years back using aluminum strips behind the donut to hold the plastic together and then used 1/2” aluminum angle to support the dash in place of the original plastic struts.

I had the dash apart, so used ABS strips or pieces I cut out of a sheet of it wherever it needed reinforcement. Make sure
the old plastic is clean, maybe scuff sand to be sure. ABS glue is pretty quick, only a few minutes until it sets up, but I left it
a few hours, just in case. I applied the ABS glue to both parts and clamped it together to set up. Has been holding fine for over a year now.

You could easily go in from behind the dash; just need to get access so you can clamp it; I used cheap spring clamps. Could probably just hold it
together for 30 seconds or so, and then let it sit as long as there were no forces on it until it's fully cured.

Optionally, lay the pieces out jigsaw style on a piece of aluminum plate and roll your own. I'm doing a [iece of checkerplate for the ratrod toad,
into which will be going a set of cheeep digital gauges. In your GMC, I'd use the originals as long as they work.

I have looked it a stock replacement, and next month I hope Jeff Sirum has the perfect part we found in one of his parts coaches out for me. Then I
will build a mold and get a part out. to see if it works. Stay tuned.
