Greetings everyone. I am having trouble with my instruments on my 1976 Eleganza II.

My speedometer is slower than it should be by about 7 mph. The gas gauge shows full all the time, the Temp shows "Cold" all the time. The Oil pressure
shows Low all the time.

I had planned to drop my gas tanks to clean the sending unit connections, but since everything else isn't working, I'm wondering if it could be
something else before I go down that road.

Thanks,
Michael

The fuel level can wait, but the engine Temp and oil pressure is important

Add a ground wire from the dash instruments to the coach frame and see what happens.

Did you check to see if your "Instrument" fuse had blown? I had the same problem and it was the fuse.

Michael,

Believe Jerry on this one...
Don't just pull the fuse and look at it. I once had a SFE fuse that had high resistance. Just enough so that the load end still had some voltage
according to the meter I was using. When I pulled the load end loose and put a test light on it, the light did light, but was dim.

I want you to believe that it took only a few minutes to finish this diagnosis and I never got the shouting profanities stage....

You can start by pulling the flag terminals on the temp and oil senders, spraying with contact cleaner and pushing them back on. Lightly squeaze the
female terminal if not snug. The GM guages themselves were used in millions of vehicles and are usually not the issue.

Do you have OEM gauges or aftermarket as a Mac dash ?

So I have replaced the fuse which apparently goes to instruments and Transmission. That didn't fix the issue. I did check/clean the connection for the
fuse and it seems to be fine. I started taking apart the dash board...That made me uneasy since I have no idea how to interpret any of those wires.
Anyway I am not sure where to find the ground for the instrument cluster. Any suggestions?

Michael

Iirc The gauges ground to the metal plate which they are mounted in. To
test if the ground is a problem temporarily attach a wire to that plate and
run it to a known good ground area and see if your gauges come back to
life.

Most of these speedos are pessimistic a bit, probably due to age. If the needle is steady, don't worry, just mentally add ten percent and go on your
way. Optionally, send it to one of the instrument repair shops and it will come back correct.
If the needle quivers or jumps, pull the cable (Cables if you have the original cruise control or a resolver for a Rostra setup) and lube them and
inspect for damage from heat or wear. ANY broken strand is cause to replace. Check to be sure the cable is clear of the exhaust plumbing and the
outer isn't heat damaged. The concern is not so much the speedo - your GPS has a more accurate one anyway - but that the weakest link in the speedo
drive is the nylon gear turning the transmission governor, which governor also spins the speedo cable. Strip the governor drive and the transmission
doesn't shift correctly. It's no fun to replace in the WalMart parking lot, particularly if the coach has headers fitted.
