Dana air compressor

I installed a rebuild kit for the Dana air compressor and I had the electric
motor checked out at an electrical motor shop. They said it was ok. I also
made sure the rotation of the motor was in the right direction (clockwise).
However, after I installed the Dana unit into the Motorhome, the 20 Amp fuse
blew within ten seconds. I then installed a 25 amp fuse and it blew within
20 seconds. Then I stalled a 30 amp fuse (that's the highest amp fuse I can
put in because of the 30 amp breaker) and it blew within 2 minutes. Also
the connections to the air compressor pressure switch start smoking along
with the fuse box for the air compressor.

I can run the electric motor alone with a 20 amp fuse. The fuse gets hot
but does not blow.

I followed the instructions to the rebuild kit and it says not to use any
lubricant on the compressor cylinders.

What am I doing wrong??? I welcome any and all suggestions. HELP!

Did you time the cylinders correctly? make sure you can turn the compressor
by hand before hooking it up.
NEVER, NEVER, NEVER PUT AN OVERSIZE FUSE IN ANY ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT!!! You
will be lucky if you only destroyed the motor and switch. Many have burned
upo their wiring harnesses like this.

I would suggest if you do not have the factory manual for the coach you get
one before gong any further.

yes I timed the cylinders and I have the manuals. thanks for reply.

I second the never put a larger sized fuse in place of what is supposed to be there. I recently purchased a '74 Sequoia that the previous owner had done just that. He then removed the fuse from the Dana compressor altogether. It took me better than 2 weeks and countless trips to the junk yard to fix the wiring harness and all the vacume lines going to the air control in the dash board.
Have you tried connecting the compressor to 12 volts while it is sitting on your work bench. It can be easier to trouble shot it there than in the coach.

You need to furnish more information. The coach does not have 2 compressors.

Not true. Coaches with Electro Level II have twin compressors, as my 78
Royal does.

I have the rear twin bed Royale floor plan and the compressors (two
separate single cylinder ones) are located under the bed board on the
drivers side in the space that is just ahead of the generator enclosure
and just aft of the bathroom wall.

twin cylinder Dana?

My 78 Royale manuf in early 1978 only had one with the Electro level II.
I have replace the Dana unit with a large 2 cyl. Gast 12 Volt compressor
with great success.

The 78 Royale I have has the two small cylinder air compressors. I
believe that the previous owner had it installed. The system worked
fine tonight after I started to
the engine. Must have a low battery that is causing the problem.

Lest anyone still have doubts that twin compressors for the rear
suspension were indeed installed in the coach by GMC, look at Figure 2,
page 4B-3 of the '1977 and 1978 Maintenance Manual Supplement' (X-7725),
which shows the Type II rear suspension - Electro Level II.

It sounds like you may have a poor ground (-) terminal. Try attaching the wire to the negative side of the battery. If this works run a jumper to a known good ground.
