I agree with Mr. Simmons,
I have installed cruise controls on every older vehicle I've had and
have had great success with the Sears units. (Dana Corp.) Sears no
longer handles them and Dana no longer makes them. Dana sold their
entire line to Rostra Controls and the product quality is excellent.
The Sears $89.95 is also a part of history though.
There are distributers in most large cities so maybe we can find a
"deal" on a group purchase from one of them.
How about it Duane?

Claude:

I'm currently installing one. Real happy with all the room created at the
back of the engine by removing the transducer and bellows/vacuum canister
and their associated brackets, plus an array of vacuum hoses that are no
longer used.

Was able to run the wire from the controller, I mounted on the turn signal
lever, in through the rectangular slot in the column that the lever fits
into and then down through the steering column. No wire runs exposed down
the outside of the column that isn't otherwise covered by the under steering
column panel.

Did you record your actuator programming switch settings? If so, what are
they? Mine are in order: 1 - On, 2 - Off, 3 - On, 4 - On, 5 - Off, 6 - Off,
7 - On, 8 - Off, 9 - On, and 10 - Off.

For the Pulses per Mile (2000, 4000, 5000, and 8000) switches 3 & 4, where
does one find which number to use? I just guessed 2000.

I used the:

a. Threaded tube clamp (item # 24 of the parts list) to anchor the
cable assembly to the bracket on the rear of the carburetor, adjacent to the
accelerator cable anchor point.
b. Original cruise control bracket attached to the carburetor throttle
lever stud to attach the beaded chain.

I'll have lots of left over parts from the kit when I'm done.

Which parts did you use for the above?

For any one needing to replace their OEM Cruise control, one choice is a
change to an electronic one similar to current autos. The Rostra, Ultra II
Cruise Control makes a very neat, compact and functional update to modern
standards. It is easy to move speed up or down by tapping the control
briefly or to return to a previous selected speed after a slow down or stop.
The unit consists of a:
1. 5"x4"x3" sealed electronic Actuator Control (or Assembly)-P/N 250-1223.
2. Small Pulse Generator, about 2" in dia. which monitors your speed via
the speedometer cable from the transmission- P/N 250-4153.
3. Modern appearing hand control mounted on the end of the original turn
signal arm after cutting off the plastic end. P/N 250-3032
Instructions are included and Duanne adds some supplemental ones for the
GMC.,however the following will give GMC'ers an idea of proceedures.
1. All old cruise control components are removed, including transducer,
brackets, vacuum hosing and off switch at brake pedal. This frees up some
room at the rear of the motor around the distributor and makes for a cleaner
and neater appearing motor.
2. Short speedo. cable from trans. is curved left of motor well and screwed
into pulse generator. The longer cable is scewed into the other side of
Pulse Gen. and routed in an easy arc up to the speedometer. 3.The Actuator
is mounted on a bracket in the engine area to one of the bolts for the
drivers seat base.
4. A small cable from Actuator is routed beside the accelerator cable &
hooked to the same spot as the chain for the OEM cruise control
5. End of the turn signal is cut off and a new control is slid on and held
in place with two small allen screws. Mount it so lever can be seen from
driving position.
6. Electrically via wiring harness, unit is connected to + power behind
glove box and at brake pedal and grounded along the aluminum frame of the
motor well.

Dave-

I checked the settings as against what I have been given and what I know
works. You are now correct except on number 2 which should be set at
"On". I think you will find that with the pulses now set right at 8000,
that " Normal" setting for switch 2 is fine. I'm not saying the Off
setting won't work, but you should find the On is the right one.
Sorry I didn't get to you sooner but am behind in my reading the posts.
