I e-mailed Rod Haddix/ECG/Dana and asked for the Mr. Gasket p/n
for their Copper Seal line of gaskets for the Olds 455 OEM exhaust
manifold. He responded that it is their p/n 7170 and that the gaskets
should be installed dry without any sealants. Max at Rush-Buskirk also
recommended the gaskest be installed without sealant. I'm going to give
them a try and see what happens. My last gaskets (Felpro 1439s) lasted
about 20 k before blowing, but the machine shop today had to remove a
little metal from each manifold's port flanges to get them flat again.

I ordered these same exact ones Saturday (special order) from Champion Auto
(locally). $49.95 so they had better do the trick for me! Should be in
today. I'll let you know how it goes if the weather permits...

Nate,

To my knowledge, the copper gaskets are best used on a new motor with flat
head surfaces and with OEM manifolds. The mate surface of the headers you
have are not flat enough to accept the copper gaskets.

I have been schooled that headers need plyable gaskets of bomposite
material that will form around the header ports and that periodic
retorqueing is a must!

If the manifolds we installed blew out, give them another chance. They are
Mr. Gasket Super Pro gaskets. Torque them cold, run the temp up let them
cool down and torque them again. They sure work for us.

Good luck and if you do use the copper gaskets please let me know how
things go. I am always open for new stuff.

Netters,
I just received a set of solid copper gaskets for the exhaust manifold
to head joint. They are made by Specialty Component Engineering of
Lancaster, CA. Their part number is 4079 and I got them from
Rush-Buskirk. Price was $45 a pair. They look like they are stamped
from about 16 ga. copper sheet. There is a re-inforcing web between the
two center exhaust ports, much like the piece on the Felpro 1439
gaskets. On one side, circling each port, is a raised ridge about a
sixteenth of an inch wide and high. It looks like it was formed by a
stamping tool pushing from the other side because there is a
corresponding indentation to the ridge there. There were no
installation instructions but Max at Rush-Buskirk recommended that they
be installed "dry" without any sealer. My question is: which part---the
heads or manifold---should the raised ridge face? Its not obvious to me
but I'm sure this group has an answer. Thanks.

Noticed a thread yesterday about this. My Mr. Gasket 7170 Solid Copper came
with an instruction sheet stating that you should place the embossed O-Ring
facing outward. Also they call their nifty washers Hi-Collar lock washers.
They say to use oil or Moly on the bolts and w/oil use more torque than with
Moly. I'll use Never Seize on the bolts so guess I'll use the Moly torque
spec of 23 ft. Lbs. (for 3/8-16). Doubt it but if they are 5/16-18 that is
only 13 ft. Lbs. I'll be sure to check 'em first.
