oncw again, has anyone seen or heard of oris thinking of,converting from
clutch fan to electric fan for cooling rad.?i have to believe that its
possiable,to many addvantages if it works, reliablity, less wear on the water
pump & bearings,NOISE REDUCTION,a tad more power,maybe even a little more
milage!!!!! normally anything above 40 mph , in theory,no fan is needed
since enough air flows thru rad. my clutch gave up,roar was like a chinese
torture, replace same with the napa 301 (last 3 digits) now it takes about a
hour to feather after start up,and many minutes after a stop light!!going

I plan on doing it sometime this summer when other high priority things get
done. I have an electric fan on my corvette and it seldom goes on. the GMC
should work equally well.

When it comes to converting to a different cooling method, it just depends on
who you talk to. Some people say that electric will move more air and some say
the original config. moves more. I do know that when you go to electric you can
pretty much move as much air as you can afford to pay for. Up to 2200 cfm or
more if you got the bucks. One speed shop here in town says a lot of the racers
are using a $30.00 plastic four blade fan because it moves more air. I'm not
sure I buy that, but for $30 I think I might try. The best solution I was
given, and I'm seriously considering is to separate the oil and trans cooling
from the main rad and use different coolers independently. I also think that it
seems reasonable that to supplement the clutch with an electric might be the
way to go, although there would be a horsepower increase by removing the engine
driven fan. You also might consider a 18 or 19 inch flex fan. That was just to
let you know of yet another option. Decisions, decisions. I do like the idea
of that horsepower increase. OK, electric (big size) with separate trans and
oil coolers and of course the side engine vents from the Co-op. Darren

Hi Jeanne,

I know that Dallas Jensen runs with only electric fans. Try him at
dallas

He is a full timer so don't expect an immdediate reply. At one of our
tech sessions he was asked about it and says he has had "zero problems"

I tried that a long time ago after replacing several (aftermarket) fan
clutches in a short time.

T O O N O I S Y. For my liking, anyways.

Went back to a GM fan clutch and have been there ever since.

Just my pennies worth...

The idea of a LARGE electric behind the rad instead of the engine driven one
is very intriguing though.

Here is a web site that may answer some of your questions on the use of
electric fans: http://flex/ http://flex/

Notice that in the frequently asked questions section that they don't
recommend elimination of the original cooling fan.
