Well, I agree this whole episode was enough to irritate an oyster. If
some were persuaded to sign up for the Black List based on a bogus
discussion proposing to offer help only to names on the list, it seems
to me that violates the "voluntary" nature of Roger's idea. If I ever
need to call a "Blacklister for help, (I should realistically say "when"
instead of "if") I certainly hope his name's there because he (or she!)
was sincere in their offer of assistance.

That said, I do agree that insufficient mechanical aptitude is no excuse
for not signing up. I've been on the Black list since Roger first
proposed it, and the only thing I know how to fix is a cold adult
beverage. (Well, and maybe an airbag.)

I am the Associate Executive Director of the Stamford YMCA. Our policy
is to accept anyone, regardless of race, color, religion, ethnicity,
financial status or type of motorhome. The only requirement is that you
be interested in a healthy, wholesome lifestyle, the definition of which
is your own.

I was accepted on the GMCnet without any questions. The purposes of the
GMCnet were well defined. Anyone with an interest in the GMC Classic
motorhome.

The Blacklist too has no other restrictions other than the willingness
to help another GMC owner in need. It allows each to define his level
of involvement.

I appreciate Toms goal but am not so sure about his method. It is not
the one I would use, but I wouldn't deny him the right to try. I plan
to use the power of persuasion, not the power of fear, to get that list
to as many members as we can.

I am about to leave on my journey to Colorado. Not sure if I will have
any more time to post. I wanted to thank each and every one of you,
from Paul Bartz who pulled over on the side of the road in the middle
of a rainy night to offer assistance a year ago, to Tom for his great
tool and and all the rest of you whether you helped me directly or not,
in making our GMC mechanically safer and more reliable. Even if it does
break down I have learned much from the collection of folks on the
GMCnet. I will not travel alone, besides Julie and the kids and Skippy
the Dog, I will have all of you and those generous fellow travelers on
the GMCnet and Black List with me.

Thanks again, especially Patrick for getting this whole thing running.

Gosh this sounds like a farewell address. It is only the
beginning.......Trip report to follow in about three weeks.

Tim - Excuse me if this is answering a 10 day old message but I'm
just catching up with my mail after returning from my latest trip.

I have a lot of mechanical knowledge about my GMC but I'll got to
tell everyone that when I broke down last summer near your I-94 exit
with a major engine problem and I wasn't sure just what it was
(turned out to be a spun rod bearing and required engine replacement)
and called you it was really great just to have someone to talk with
about the problem. You also knew a tow truck service that was able
to haul my GMC off the expressway. I also then called Paul Bartz in
Kalamazoo, MI for his help regarding rebuilding engines locally and
also called Tom Warner in NY State for his assistance regarding
information on Mondello and Jasper engines.

I could have, of course, survived without all the help I got but just
even having the chance to discuss my problem with fellow GMCers was a
great morale booster. Especially when one is stranded about 2000
miles from home.

I've gotten several calls from GMCers using the Black List that have
had problems in the Santa Fe / Albuquerque area in the last couple of
years and in most cases were able to get them going back on the road
to complete their trip in relatively short time. I've probably
gotten as much self satisfaction from helping as they have from
receiving help. Anyone can call me anytime, day or night, whether
they are on the list or not but I would encourage everyone on this
GMCnet to get their name on the list even if it is just to give the
person in trouble a sympathetic ear, the name of a good motel, or a
hot cup of coffee.
