Composite Plastic Airbag Cones

I recently inherited a pickup truck load of GMC "stuff" from former GMCer Jim Dechaine. Among the items he passed along to me are three composite
plastic airbag cones. I have heard about plastic cones before, and the ones I have seen pictured appeared to be made of ABS or something similar. I
know those are to be thrown in the trash, but these are some sort of light gray fiber reinforced composite material. Same thing? Throw them in the
trash?

Yes. Trash them. You want to use aluminum ones.

Having experienced a plastic cone breakage (early in my ownership before I knew they were a problem) that cut a perfectly good bag on its way out - I
would say don't risk it. With many people going to alternate solutions, there should be plenty of aluminum cones out there for people who need them. I
have an extra set of aluminum I think - if someone has plastic, PM me.

To anyone who this is new information - take a small wrench out and tap the edge of your cone - if it does not sound like metal, you need to
swap...age only makes this problem worse. The job is not that hard when at home, with time to let the penetrant soak, tools, etc. At the beach with
borrowed jacks, limited time, on sand, scrabbling up 4x4 block proper length to hold it to go home...no fun.

And if you get that far in, try to replace the O-ring on the air bag inlet (use both mounting nuts on air side to double nut lock for grip). I used a
#17 from HomeDepot 1 1/16 o.d., x 7/8 i.d. x 3/32

There are also several (about 7) aluminum cones in the collection. I have no use for either since I have Quadbags on my coach. I'll trash the
plastic ones. If anyone needs aluminum cones, I have a good supply of them.

Like we used to say in food service "If in doubt, throw it out". Applies to
plastic cones as well as ice cream cones. Bad stuff can and has happened
with those plastic cones.

If you want to get rid of the aluminum ones, send them to me. I clean them up, bead blast them, polish up the areas where they touch the bags and
paint them Rustolem black. Then about once a year I get request for one or two and I mail them out for free. I sent my last set out about 6 months
ago and do not have any more to rehab.

Ken, I have several that I could send to you. I need to get rid of excess
items as I plan on moving in the new year.

I have a few plastic cones - the best use I have thought of - put the skid resistant shelf paper on the flat end and use them for cup holders.
