If you are only going to be going the header route and not change the
entire exhaust system at the same time there may be no change or the
temp under the hood will go up. The OEM mufflers are restricted down to
1.75" internally, which doesn't let a whole lot of exhaust gasses
through. Before you go the header route I would suggest, with my limited
knowledge, to change the mufflers and change to 3" pipe. This, you may
find, will reduce the temps. significantly. Just my own experience to go
by here. It was even pointed out to me by more than 1 person in the
business that it would be a wiser thing to do to go to the 3" pipe and
dual high flow mufflers. Two 2.5" off the manifolds into twin HF
mufflers with 2.75" restrictions into a single 3" pipe works extremely
well for me. BTW 2 x 2.5" pipes = the same volume as 1 x 3" pipe.
Just my own numbers to go on. FWIW I also run a 160 thermostat.
Calgary to Albuquerque + 1500 miles at 65 - 70 mph. Temp never went
above 165 on the gauge. New gauge tested to within 2 dig. accuracy.
