Chevy had the small block series..
283.327,350.400
Intermediate series...

Big block...

The small block could be made into several different sizes depending on what combination of cranks/blocks were used..
ie:302 = 283 crank in 327 block
The main difference between the 283/327 and 350/400 block was a recasting to allow for bigger bore sizes but they shared the same exterior 'stuff'..
The Olds engines were similiar but different..
I'm not sure of where the 403 came from but I ASSUME it was a version of the Olds block or an adaptation of the chevy block when they started using generic engines in different cars..
The 455 I believe is its own design..
