changing steering box

Picked up a rebuilt steering box at the local NAPA autoparts store. Just
over $200. by the time all was said and done. He did not charge me a core
charge. It is definitely a rebuild. Box has a tag on the end with Parts
Master of San Antonio, Tx as the rebuilder. Part number is 27-7519. Before I
go to the trouble of installing this I have a few questions.
1. How do I determine the gear ratio??
2. Is there someone who will rebuild my old gear box??
3. Should I replace the pump at the same time??
4. In the installation papers is a disclaimer to the effect that if I do not
install a filter the warrantee is void. What type filter would be the best?
If this filter is such a good deal why doesn't new cars come with them??
5. Has anyone had any long term experience with Synthetic oil in this
system??
What weight?? What brand??
Please do not tell me that I should have purchased the most expensive
available. The years have taught me that money will not buy me happiness or
the best auto parts...................................Terry

Sure hope someone responds to Terry's questons. I've got a leaky box and
some looseness in the steering and need to get it taken care of before our
next trip in late August.

Hi Terry
I can't answer all those questions but I'll tell you what I can.
I have been to 3 GMC conventions & at each on of them different
speakers have lambasted rebuilders. They say the rebuilders just use
old parts from other units & just use the best of these to rebuild
the unit . I am sure that is not true of all of them but I put a
rebuild in my coach & it never worked properly. When I had it
replaced cursory examination showed it to be defective.
Max Pardy at Rush Buskirk replaced it with one that had been rebuilt
by someone in Texas ( a fellow gmc'er I think).
Call Max @ 1 800 715 1133 & I think he will be able to help you .
Buskirk Rush specialize in GMC's in case you don't know the firm.
The price for the unit was very reasonable. I think about $ 150.
After 5,000 miles it is still working very well.

Thanks tom --but I do not think that adjustment will do anything for the way
it locks up when I turn left. I did go to the U-pull-IT wrecking yard today.
Found a gear box in a GMC pick up that is the same ratio as my GMC (3.4 to
1) $26 later it is sitting on my work bench next to mine. I can not find any
difference between the two so I called the local auto parts and asked for a
rebuild kit. they offer one rebuild kit and it covers from 1964 to 1989. I
am going to install the one from the P.U. on the motorhome and see if it
will operate properly. Then we can take our time and rebuild the original.
At least it sounds like a plan. ......................Terry

All this discussion about adjusting instead of replacing our steering boxes
is causing me to have doubts about my decuision to replace ours. Our coach
has a little too much play in the seering and leaks steering fluid from the
box. I have been told that the only fix is to rebuild it. Before we pay out
good money to have a NAPA rebuilt box put on, is there an altetnative?

It will be interesting to find out if you are correct. Wife and I are going
to Idaho next week and when we get back I will dismantle the original for
rebuild. At the start of this I had my friend who is a Cadillac mechanic
drive the motorhome. He said that more than likely there was a broken ball
and that to continue driving would score the housing and make it unusable
for rebuild. The P.U. steering box is installed and fits perfectly. No
modification was required. I will post the results when I get back. By the
way, I installed the filter just in case there are any bits and pieces
floating around. .................Terry

I personally would try this before replacing the steer gear with a
totally unknown rebuilt replacement from a parts shop where you don't
know the "pedigree" of the box and don't know if the parts in it are
new or used.
