Centering the steering box

Larry,

Be aware that the U-joint can be made to "fit" even when it is a tooth off. (Mine was two off but someone made it fit by hammering the bolt through.)
I think that the manual specifies a drill size to fit in there, but I can't find it as I write.

We put the drill bit through before inserting the bolt, Matt.

Bill, I examined the Mevotech MS50018 adjusters I ordered as replacements today and yes the washers were flat with no bevel.

I'll be returning them. Hopefully no-one orders these later on.

Curious about whether anyone has tried this ...speaking to someone today who said it might be an idea to replace the steering box with a (new) larger
unit from a heavy duty truck.
What do we think about going that route? possible? unnecessary? easy/difficult to fit?

I had mine rebuilt at Redhead in Seattle. That way, you retain the stops that prevent the knuckle from hitting the lower ball joint. A friend has a
progressive ratio version that improves the tracking going straight down the road. I think the OEM box is plenty strong; never heard of them breaking
- only wearing out.

You don't want to go that route due to the fact that the number of turns "lock to lock" needs to be limited to ~3 1/3 turns of the steering wheel. Any
more than that will damage the knuckles etc. As was probably mentioned before, even the same steering boxes from the auto parts store, like for a
pickup truck, will have more turns and that would be bad. Ask Dave L. about this as he has seen boxes from trucks that can't be used for his
rebuilding.

Our gear box has a built in stops that prevent over turning and loosening
the ball joints.
I learn these from people that know lot about the gear box and also why the
Lower ball joins ears snap.
