I recently cancelled a wireless service but still have the phone. Do any of my
fellow-GMCers know if the phone can still be used for emergencies even though it
is not "signed up" under a service plan? For example, would 911 still work? Or
could it be used for credit card calls while perpetually "roaming" with no home
service area assigned to it?

I was told that it is law (federal?) that all phones must work on 911. so if
you keep it charged, it is always going to be good for emergency use. I'm
not sure about the second premise. Although since it sounds like a way to
beat those stinking phone companies out of a nickel, I doubt it.

I heard that if you aren't signed up for a carrier...dial
your number you want to call and hit "SEND". A nationwide phone co. will
connect you..after you give them a credit card number...probably cost a
mint!!!

Yep it works, just enter any number like 1 and hit send, they will come on
and say you are not a member and then they will connect you to the American
Roaming network. There you can place a call like on a pay phone and it
will go on your credit card. It was about $1 per min as I remember and
some places had a roaming charge for the local carrier but since it was for
emergencies, I did not care.

try it.

I know that by law, the phone can be used for 911 calls even if you are
not contracted with a service.
