Yep it works, just enter any number like 1 and hit send, they will come on
and say you are not a member and then they will connect you to the American
Roaming network. There you can place a call like on a pay phone and it
will go on your credit card. It was about $1 per min as I remember and
some places had a roaming charge for the local carrier but since it was for
emergencies, I did not care.
