ohh man! sounds like a close call. not familiar with PA but copperheads and water snakes in the S.E. look very similar but the copperheads are short
and fat, the water snakes are long and slim.

they are both very fast movers when its hot. the copperheads stay their spot, the water snakes usually do not and flee quickly.

copper heads are very strong too so if you try to catch it and then hold it by squeezing his neck you better have a death grip on it! I learned this
first hand (gloved thankfully)

Thanks for the links. I still can't tell, though. Sure seems to have the head shape and the markings. It's a little bit confusing on the video as for the first part he is moving backwards and under the carb linkage, then he loops around the back of the carb and around the fan. His return trip was the opposite.

He hissed that he could sell me something that would make the engine run smoother, but I think it was just some kind of snake oil...

But seriously, I'd hate for the poor guy to get caught up in there. I had a neighbor who got a groundhog all caught up in the belts of his Peugeot 505 and asked me to come over and help because I "knew cars". That poor creature was screaming in pain but was still able to run away after I cut the belt to get him free.

From what I see of the head, you have what we call a rat suh-nake or a corn snake. I can't see closely enough, if the head appears triangular and
pulls in for the neck and there's a dimple behind each eye, you have a copperhead, which you should dispatch before you get bit. The reason he's
there is the engine holds the day's heat from yesterday and he's keeping warm.
I've a black snake which resides in the back yard and shop at times. I seldom see him but I allow his presence because he thinks other snakes - we
have copperheads and rattling snakes here in the hills - are delicious.

Looks like an eastern rat snake, which has the diamond markings as a
juvenile and becomes black on top and up to six feet long as an adult. Also
known as a black snake. Not poisonous, but can still carry rabies and the
like. Generally safe, and they eat mice. Any non-poisonous snake that eats
mice can be my friend, but I don’t want him in the engine compartment or
interior of any of my vehicles.

And the Redhead can become an ICBM upon a snake encounter.

Laurie had one here two summers ago in the back yard that she put 17 rounds of .22 into. Why 17 rounds? Because that is what the magazine on that
particular rifle holds. I'm just happy that she did not use my 10-22 with a 50 round or my mini-14 with a 50 round magazine. All of these solutions
were definitely over kill for one snake.

No likeum' snakes. Hateum' Duts. Tillem' dead. If you have to ask if it is
a poisonous snake, why are you letting it crawl over your arm. No way, jose.

Definitely non-poisonous. Try to shoo away or catch it, but keep it around the house. They do come in handy.

I'll be sure to send you any of them I encounter. (Grin) I have a very
efficient cat that leaves me mouse "treasures" nearly every day.

For what it's worth, suh-nakes don't carry rabies. Mammals only, and not all of them.

Triangular head: better off dead. Oval head: just needs to be fed. None are welcome in any of the vehicles or dwellings. Chase them away in close
quarters with a compressed air extension wand and outside move them back to the woods with the leaf blower. Much more entertaining than trying to pick
the friendly ones up with the garden rake.

My question is did you already know it was there when you took the video?
If I took my air cleaner off and there was a snake underneath there would be some very choice language and probably a very entertaining fall off the
cockpit steps to watch.

Yes, I saw him again when I opened the hatch, and that’s why I took the video this time.

I didn’t know he was hiding inside of the air cleaner last month, though. Really startled me when he came out of the air horn and out across the floor. Saw him again by the batteries a week ago, too.

I give him proper respect and admiration as he apparently full-times in a GMC motorhome, and we can all agree that’s a pretty awesome lifestyle. :-)
