Although the water between the caps did not cause
the rust, it is a sign that the outer cap did not seal.
For rust to have occurred water also got past the
inner cap.
On my coach the outer caps did not show any
signs of having let water past. Did yours appear
distorted or damaged?
On my coach the rear inner caps were damaged
where, during previous service, the caps had been
pried off. Some caps had holes through them.
Because of the dual cap arrangement the inner cap
is buried deaper than on most vehicles. The position
probably contributes to the damage during servicing.
These caps are available through the normal parts
stream, although not cheap (also my local dealership
was out of stock on these and I had to commit to 5 for
the order)
