Bronzed/Brazed front hubs?

Hello,

I am a new member/owner. Working on rebuilding brakes and suspension. During disc replacement I noticed that the bearing surface of the hubs appear
to have been bronzed or brazed. Is this something that was commonly done/normal?

I'm not able to post a picture on here larger than 1KB and I don't have anywhere online that I host pictures to link to... so maybe if you know
something you can PM me and I can send it to you that way.

NO, the brass is too soft and will not endure.
Either get one from Dave Lenze, or we can supply.
I will walk yo through the process so you do not need to touch it for
80,000 miles. Something I leaarned back in 1985 from couple sharp mechanic
and machinest.

Welcome to the group, family, cult, asylum.....

You may not be aware that you have just tapped into a couple of hundred brand new old friends.

Your particular situation at this point is how well the bronze metalizing was and what alloy was used. This is a common repair in the marine trades,
but not often used at the loads of a TZE front bearing. This begs the question, have the races made tracks in the bronze? If not, you may be able to
use them for a while.

Next question: What about the insides of the knuckles?
If the outer races are loose in there, you need to get that fixed. As said either JimK or Dave can do this and do it well. Both of them think that
they have the best way, and both respect each other.

As to pictures, you can open a Dropbox account (free for a small one) [URL="http://dropbox.com"]dropbox.com[/url][/url] and then put pictures in the "Public" directory and send
links from that.

Now, if you could please do both us and yourself a small favor. You are on the forum side of the group, and if you build a sigfile, it will save
everybody a lot of time. Just go to and scroll down. Please put in your name, so we know who we just met, a short
bit about the coach (year and model can matter) and any serious mods and lastly a geographic reference. You note PNW at one point, but Sanoma is down
by Frisco and not a place I would expect to find CG. (You have to scroll down to to save it.)

This is all part of being a member of a very uncommon community. These are an amazing group of people that want nothing more than for you to get to
enjoy what the coach can do for you. It is a lot more than just a big toy because it connects you to this community of which JimK and Dave Lenzi are
a part and both are good examples. The way to annoy them is to ignore the good advice you can get here. The only other community that I know of that
is this supportive is that of the watermen that are my world. Because of that, I like to welcome new owners here much as any new owner or vessel is
welcomed there. So,

Carl says that, but if you get the hubs done right, they will never be an issue again. This is one thing that an owner can't effectively repair.
When done right, servicing the front wheel bearing becomes a non-issue and Performance Friction pad won't tear the disks up. That means you are good
for a long time.

There are lots of us that put lots of miles on our coaches every year and there are few incidents of on-road failures.

Speaking of, Get a good grease gun and find where you can buy either Mobil1 or Valvoline Synpro (vv985) grease and try real hard to over grease both
the ~14 fittings in the front and the bogie pins.

been more than worth it though for all the ten years and 40,000 miles of fun we've had.

of time / money / energy an automobile restoration consumes was enough for
me to swear off any more restorations. After my first gmc (4 years and 30+k
later) an automobile restoration seems trivial.

My last automobile restoration was on a 1961 Cadillac small roof Coupe
deVille. Body on, but front clip removed. Over $3500.00 in chrome playing.
Total costs involved? Over $40,000.00 in 1986. Beautiful car, show winner,
great freeway flyer. Award winner at Reno's Hot August Nights. And lots of
memories. Sold it when Mary got sick to pay medical expenses. Less than
$20,000.00. Very, very typical. We don't do it for the money.

Thanks for the welcoming into the community! Almost met some of you at the Fall Rally at Mt. Hood. Got the dates mixed up otherwise I would been
there. Keeping an eye out for the next close one.

Thought my budget was semi-realistic, estimated $14k to get just the mechanical portion updated/upgraded (doing 99% of the work myself). Didn't
include hub/knuckle/spindle replacements in it though... not sure I want to see the numbers with them added, hahaha!

Biggest concern now, what other "incorrect" repairs have been made? If anyone has any "this'll leave you stranded" list that I should check, please
send it my way. Planning a full bearing/brakes replacement before I even drive it but I almost missed the bronze hubs (glad I'd just emailed Dave to
ask about prices and had hub repair on my mind). Actually installed the passenger side already but as someone mentioned above, the bearing were FAR
from loose so it should last me for the short time until I'm motivated to tear it back down and replace it.

Never had a Victor, but I had a couple of it's predecessors, the GOLD STAR.
If it didn't have a pool of oil under it, you had better refill it. Engine
had it's own supply, clutch and primary chain case had theirs, and the
transmission it's own as well. Engine had power like a tractor. Stump
puller. But, you could sit down and ride it instead of standing up.

Had a 350 for a bit also. the Victor (440cc Thumper) leaked 40-50 weight from the dry sump system, 30 weight from the clutch/chain case and 90 weight
from the transmission. It invented torque. It also invented vibration at freeway speeds. Get off after a couple hours and kind of float for a
while. Lovely old Scooter.
