I guess Emery needed company - got a distress call from my father about
an hour ago. He was heading for Myrtle Beach with my children and broke
down at Latta, SC - I can't think of a worse place for trying to find
GMC service. He said he thought it was a front wheel bearing. He's
gonna' call back later with specifics after he gets it towed. I called
all the GMCMI members in a 100 mile radius, but most of them said they
drive up to Zeb's for service.

Sounds like I might be making a road trip tomorrow - about 10 hour round
trip.

More later,
Patrick

Patrick,
Unfortunately there is no one listed in South Carolina on the Black List.
Anybody in South Carolina listening?

Yep - knew that already. Only two names in the GMCMI directory within
100 miles and neither of them was home. I'm beginning to think the best
plan is to check with Zeb in the morning to see if he has a
hub/knuckle/disc assembly that I can cart down to N. Augusta. Meet dad
there and swap for the damaged parts. I know that won't be cheap tho'.
Could get parts overnighted from Sirum or Thoma, but pushed up against
the weekend kinda' narrows the options.

Road trippin',
Patrick

Patrick:

Contact Flic Acosta, the Dixielanders president in Jacksonville NC,
910-455-2491. Bet he'll know someone who can help you.

I have long time friends in Conway and Sumter if they could help; let me
know. The former one is a Dolphin owner and very knowledgeable of the area.
The later does not have an RV.

Myrtle Beach has a Camping World store.

I had to order a new knuckle yesterday from Cinnabar $240. thought it was
better since it was new and not rebuilt and no core charge. They should be
able to overnight the parts to you.

Thanks Paul! I didn't call Flic yesterday because Jacksonville is a
long way from Latta, but you're right, he's probably the best source for
info in the area.

Not too sure how much help CW would be. Dad definitely toasted a
front wheel bearing - need to find someone closer than Atlanta with the
tools and expertise.

Thanks again,
Patrick

Thanks Tom, but the concern is mainly finding someone with the
capability to do the work without bringing the parts to Atlanta. At
this point we don't know if the hub and knuckle are reusable - might be
best if we assume they aren't. :(

My fault. If I had worked a little faster you would have the bearing puller
and could removed the wheel and bearings beside the road as long as you had
a firm place to jack it up. sorry. Goes to show everyone why they need a
puller.

The are almost always reusable just not optimum. Even a hub and knuckle
that has a spun bearing is usually servicable for a short run back home.

Well, as most of you probably guessed by my silence all weekend, we made
the roadtrip to Latta, SC. 1100 miles in two days with a lot of "hurry
up and wait" thrown in. A couples snafus kept us from getting to Latta
in time to get the coach put back together on Friday, and the mechanic
doesn't work on Saturday. So, we loaded up enough food and belongings
for a weekend at the beach and got a rental at Ocean Lakes. If nothing
else goes wrong, Dad should be picking up the GMC this morning.

I set up some pic's on my site at:

http://www.gmcmotorhome.com/tech/bearing_failure/index.html

I don't think this one was a candidate for a road-side fix as I have no
doubt that the inner bearing races will need to be machined off the hub.

Regarding advance warning - it was a mixed bag. Approximately 250
miles before the failure, he did hear some noise, but it quit after he
stopped to check the tires. He didn't check the hubs, which may or may
not have made any difference.

We were planning to service the bearings when he came to visit for the
July 4th holiday. We will probably still do so as the driver's side
remains plus I want to get Mobil1 grease in there and I'm not too
pleased with the bearing that was used to replace the failed one(Asian
manufacture and only .0045 inch clearance). Before anyone gets up in
arms over my settling for that, it was the only one we could find on
short notice and I was hoping to get the coach back on the road Friday.
Since it was an emergency and I only expect the bearing to be in service
approx. 1,000 miles, it should be a safe gamble. Also, it was provided
with a "warranty"!
