On page 59 of the March 1966 issue of Consumer Reports, about Brake-Guard, et al,
they:
"reported the results of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration tests of
"ABD" add-ons for cars. NHSTA said the devices "in no way approach the
performance levels found in true antilock braking systems." "
Their conclusion: "A waste of money at any price."
However, back then, "the FTC charged ABS Trax, Brake-Guard, and ABS BrakeSafe the
makers with making deceptive and unsubstantiated claims, unfairly likening their
products to true antilock braking systems."
As Gary points out, NHTSA said they are "hydraulic accumulators".

The Brakeguard is nothing more than a hydraulic accumulator. It contains a
free-floating piston with air above it. It works just like the little tanks that
many of us have added after the house water pump in our coaches. It smooths out
minor pulsations (where they exist). It adds no flow, it adds no pressure.
Back in the early 70s when it first appearred, they sold for $29.95 and looked
like a good idea for drum-braked cars with out-of-round drums.
Their web-site is heavy on hype and loose on truth.
And that's MY opinion.

I have to admit I'm not impressed with Brakeguard's pitch. I'm not an engineer,
but there's an awful lot of "mumbo jumbo" and strange conclusions in that article.
I guess if our brakes had out of round drums and rotors, which could certainly be
felt in the pedal, it might help delay a skid in a full panic situation, but a
better solution to this band aid would be to get the brakes fixed.
I'm still leaning toward a remote bleed valve (but still open minded).
