I just picked up my GMC at the shop. They installed the Dunn
transmission
which includes the 3.50 drive. If you recall, I already have the 3.42
final
drive. First impressions are WOW. No problems at the stop light on a
hill
from a dead stop.
I do have several dilemas.
1. First the shop owner told me that on the first test drive it
wouldn't
shift. The brought it back inside and he said "there was no vacuum at
the
transmission", so he redid my vacuum system and took out the TVS
altogether
(he hates these things). Now it shifts. But it shifted with the old
vacuum
piping to the old tired tranny. What giffs?
2. Next, he tells me that the speedometer no longer works. They checked
everything out but as time was running out buttoned it back up and
invited me
to bring it back next week to diagnose this. They did say that all the
cables
seem to be o.k. Needless to say, the cruise control also is inop. All of
this
stuff worked before.
Any ideers out there?
3. The "brake" dash light is constantly on. What does this mean? (I did
get
new front pads whilst in the shop.) Is this low fluid indicator? Parking
brake "on"?
If I could get some help on these three items, I will post the complete
cost
of this and also the speedo / rpm relationship numbers (after I get the
speedo back).

Larry,
I had the same problem with the brake light on the dash. Someone told
me to literally "stamp" on the brake pedal with both feet to reposition
the piston in the proportioning valve. It worked. If this piston or
whatever it is goes past the mid point (as it will when you hit the
brakes for the first time after removing the calipers) the pedal goes
way past the halfway point and the system thinks it's low on fluid.
It's doing what it's supposed to.
No help on the speedo though, if it worked going into the shop, it
better work coming out. That's not my philosophy, just my way of life.
What did you do with your old 3.40 final drive? Or did I read your
post wrong and you added the 3.5 power drive unit to your 3.4 final
drive.
