Brake Booster

GMCers,

Another brake question for ya! Two Northern California GMC places
informed me that for $3200 they could redo my brakes and I would stop
just like a BMW! Now I don't own a BMW but I presume that means great
brakes. I asked if this included a disc brahe conversion and they said
nope. It did include a BRAKE BOOSTER or what one described as a
HANDICAP BOOSTER which would make very little foot pressurec required.

Just to add this booster would be $400 plus 4 houres labor.

Anyone know anything about this???

If you talked to Tony and Dave at Nor-cal GMC they do indeed rebuild the
brake system so that it stops very well.

A light touch does it with the booster.

The brake rebuild includes a lot of other things being replaced. Even if
you don't get a bigger booster just refurbishing to original specs makes
the coach stop a lot better - at least it did for mine. I decided to added
the booster, change the front axle brake cylinder size, add a new
proportioning valve and added accumulators to smooth out any minor
drum/rotor irregularities. (Some folks used to think that the brake guard
was a bolt on ABS - it isn't)

I'll dig the number up. If I recall correctly, the parts came from
Cinnabar, but are available elsewhere for less.

I guess you know that what you are referring to as a proportioning valve is
really a combination valve?? It is described on p. 5-3 of the X-7525A shop
manual.

Do you happen to have the name and number of the booster, and what
proportioning valve did you use?

That's exactly what they do. The value depends on how much time you have to
do the work yourself. The only thing that they may not replace are the
hardlines of they are in good shape.

Heh - If I could do three of those $3.2k brake jobs a week,
I think I could quit my day job!

I'm not sure how "proportioning" valves work. The ones that
I see in catalogs have adjustment knobs on them(I guess they must
since they're not specific to one installation). The combination
valve on our GMCs does not allow any pressure on the rear until the
front brakes are up to a preset pressure(90psi). If you think
about it, having the front brakes apply before the rear on the GMC
(especially on a wet road) could be a very nasty experience.

Oops!

I got that exactly backwards. It should read "does not allow any
pressure on the front until the rear brakes are up to a preset pressure"

I need another cup of coffee!

proportioning valve is Delco 172-1351,GM 25515634 (Utica General Truck
732-6115). It should be available at any GMC truck garage.

Eaton Distributing sells an enhanced booster for the GMC. They sell it for
$316.18 plus shipping. This booster comes from a place in Ca. and it is
made for the handicap industry. Probably the same thing. I have heard good
things about this item and am considering it for myself. Darren

If you can take off the old one and send it to Bob Lamy, he will return it
fixed for about $150... that is what I paid. Then with about a half an
hour of your time you will have a new brake booster with the handicap
capabilty. What that means is that you need less brake pressure to apply
the brakes.
