I had an incredible number of "bounces" over the holidays. Between all
the holiday activities and getting over a bout with the flu, I didn't
have time to handle them all and finally tossed 'em in the "bit bucket".
Bounces generally fall into three groups in descending order of
severity:
Rich Text(HTML encoded) - This is by far the worst offender. The
internet has traditionally been a "plain text" medium until a few years
back when some software companies figured out how to turn emails into
mini web pages. Basically, it just sends two copies of the same
message. The first is plain text(or a variation thereof) and the second
contains the HTML tags. The reason that this message type is not
allowed is that the digest can't properly display the message and the
result is a mess. If you receive an email with boldface or proportional
space fonts, it's HTML encoded. If you click on "View" then "Document
Source" on the top menu bar, you can see what this looks like in the
digest.
This is the default message type in MS Outlook Express. The fix is
pretty simple. Set up an Address Book entry in MSOE for
gmcmotorhome In the dialog box where you set up the
entry, there is a little check box that says something to the effect,
"Always send in Rich Text". Be sure that this box is UNchecked and MSOE
will send in "plain text" only.
Non-member submissions from members - GMCnet is a "closed" list. This
is mainly protection from spammers who seem to target "Open" lists(just
subscribe to the Toronado list a little while to see what I mean). It's
not unusual for non-members to try to post without subscribing and I
usually send them an email offering to subscribe them if they'll tell me
whether they prefer "real-time" or "digest". Occasionally members
forget that the "From" address on their posts must match their
"subscribed" address and send from a "work" account. One way around
this is to subscribe the work account to the "digest". If you're
computer literate enough, you may be able to "correct" the "From"
header, but some mail servers get picky about that.
Attachments - Since email is basically text only, email programs must
convert binary files to text before sending them. Again, if you get an
email with an image attached, try the "View" "Document Source" option to
see what this would look like in the digest. Even the smallest graphic
easily exceeds the 10,000 character limit of the digest.
Let me know if you have any questions on this. I've got to make this
part of a FAQ soon!
