Just got an email from Hunter McCarthy. She and Bob were visiting
relatives in NC when Bob became ill and has been hospitalized. I don't
have any other details right now and will forward more as I hear from
Hunter. Bob was concerned that he hadn't unsubscribed before he left
and had Hunter use a friend's email account to ask me to remove him from
the list for now.

Keep Bob in your prayers.

Netters,

I received the following update on Bob today. I've kept it anonymous as
I'm not sure if Bob's brother-in-law wants 100's of unsolicited emails.
The text follows:

> I'm Bob's brother-in-law in Chocowinity, NC. Bob is very sick in Pitt
> Memorial Hospital, Greenville, NC. He has sustained wide-spread damage to a
> number of his internal organs due to pancreatitis, is in ICU, and his

>
> Their children all flew in to Greenville yesterday evening (Mon), and are

> I will tell Hunter of your message and pass the concern and best wishes of

Netters,

I had a lengthy telephone conversation this evening with Bud Crampton,
Bob McCarthy's brother-in-law. Bob's situation is extremely grave and
it appears doubtful that he will recover. Bud agreed to forward any
encouragement that we would like to send to Hunter, who at this time
is staying with her children in a hotel near the hospital. He requested
that we limit this to cards and email, the family certainly does not
want flowers or any other gifts at this time.

Please be careful that any message you send be appropriate considering
the very grave circumstances. The address is:

GMCnetters,

Well, there's some good news today regarding Bob. He has improved a
little overnight when the doctors didn't expect him to make it through
the night. I spoke with Molly McCarthy Chessman this afternoon and she
tells me that the doctors are "cautiously optimistic" about Bob's chance
of recovery. He's definitely not out of danger yet tho' and Molly
requested that we continue to keep them in our prayers - IMO, they're
doing some good!

A short update on Bob's condition:

I just received a message from Molly McCarthy. Bob passed away at 8:45 this
morning. Hunter will be staying at her sister's house in Chocowinity for
another day or two. I would imagine that she will return home after that to
attend to final arrangements.

I'm sure the family would appreciate any messages of sympathy and support at
this time.

I'm trying not to be poetic here, but in the midst of the present
controversy over what is said and how it's said, Bob's passing should put
some of this in perspective. He was the picture of health, never sick a day
in his life and two days later he was in a coma. Life is extremely fragile
and you're not even guaranteed your next heartbeat. Maybe we should all
measure our words as if they might be the last we utter.

A radio commercial running locally in Atlanta recommends that you "Start
with your eulogy and work backwards." It is entirely within our control as
to how we are remembered. Bob McCarthy will be remembered as a gentleman
because of the way he lived his life.

Don't know what else I can say...
Patrick

Agreed.
I had several occasions to talk with Bob. I really liked him. A very nice guy. I
will miss him at the rallies. Darren

Well, I know that the family specifically requested no flowers or gifts
while Bob was in the hospital. I will contact the family and request
where we might could send a memorium. That's a much more lasting gift
than flowers.
