Necropost I know, but looks like I'm this situation too. My steering shaft has chunks of blue missing.

My plan is to repair the blue coating with JB Weld. Thoughts?

If it isn’t sloppy or bound up why bother? I would wait for a problem
before coming up with a solution. If you are missing the coating across the
whole length of one spline and it’s causing play you probably need to do
something. But a chunk here and there and no play? I’d leave it.

I know of someone that said he was setting up to do it but that was about 2 years ago. I will try to contact him BEFORE posting it here.

Is Alex Ferrarra still coating the shafts with ceramic paint?
I have purchased a couple from him for coaches that I have worked on and it
seems to be a reasonable replacement. .

Our Blue shaft is coated and fitted by Alex Ferrara.
I do not know what he uses, but we have so few dozen.

Repaired the missing and worn areas of blue plastic on the shaft last night with terracotta Milliput, a water-toolable epoxy putty used for pottery
restoration. I used the reddish coloured stuff for contrast so I could easily see the repairs. The bare metal areas were scored then cleaned with
acetone prior to application.

Measured with a vernier and filed to shape this morning, looks good, hopefully it will work.
