BLACK TANK Not you Roger

Need a little info. We are installing our macerator and at the same time I
guess we are going to have to remove the Original valve at the tank as we
had a small leak between the tank and the valve an now with all the pushing
on the pipes we now have a larger leak.
Before removing can someone tell me exactly how it is attached to the tank
other than the 4 bolts at each corner. In sequence what will we find?

Guess I should also ask once we have the valve out is there any repair
replacment parts we should use.

I am changing my b-tank (how is that Roger?) and I will be writing more
about the Macerator soon.

a guess on the last thing you'll find.

Roger, still looking for my own personal Black Tank.
 
That's not quite what I was looking for Roger {;>). I know what we will find
last.
I mean is there a tube as part of the tank anything else permanent on the
tank etc.

I already went to Scott's site before I sent out my SOS and found the ONE
picture of the front of the tank with the plate of the original valve
attached. What will we find under that etc. Don't want to pry off anything
we are not supposed to. Looks like our bolts are well rusted so will take
time to get them removed.

If you've told us, I can't remember (CRS).

Marlene - the back side of the Thetford valve is a stainless steel
plate which has a special round gasket that fits loose between the
square plastic flange on the tank and the stainless steel plate on
the valve. Note that Valterra valves and parts do not fit. The GMC
had a Thetford valve. If you can't find that round gasket, I carry
an extra one with me and can send it to you. Its about $6 give or
take a little. There is an RV dealer here in Santa Fe that carries
them.

Unless the valve has been disturbed it is likely that your leak is
not that gasket but actually inside the while plastic slide part of
the valve. On the inside of the stainless steel plate there is a
gasket glued to the stainless steel plate which the slide valve
covers when the valve is closed. I have never found anything that
will reglue it to the plate. These have a tendency to break loose
after many years of use and Thetford made a kit that was comprised of
a new stainless steel plate with the gasket and a new slide for the
valve. You probably won't find any kits anymore but you might find a
valve. Quite expensive (maybe $40 or 50 if you can find them). I
found a source for a limited amount of valves made by another
manufacturer that used the same stainless steel plate and gasket ($25
plus $3.20 shipping and when they are gone they are gone). You can
drill out the four brass rivets that the mounting screws go through
and replace the stainless steel plate with the one that I found to
repair the valve. You don't have to remove the white part of the
original Thetford valve from the pipe that it is glued to.

If the four screws that hold the valve to the tank flange are rusted
they will probably strip out of the square plastic tank flange. No
problem. Just drill out the holes with a 1/4" bit and use four
stainless steel bolts, washers and nuts to fasten the valve back to
the flange.

I am leaving on Tuesday for the Phoenix area for about a week or 10
days so if you need anything sent to you let me know right away.

I think mine is different..... the white valve is welded onto the
tank. Infact the white part of mine is broken and that is what is
leaking....

Gene - the original valve had a square flange that was glued to the
tank and the valve bolted to it. Thetford also made some valves with
a glue sleeve on both sides. Maybe someone put one of these on your
GMC. Because if they put the valve on with a bolt on stainless steel
plate away from the tank then the plastic slide valve would be sure
to leak through the valve stem.

Thanks Scott
I missed the the valve section the first time around just didn't scroll down
far enough. Only looked at the Black Tank pictures. Duh!
