Black List

Wow, did I get a shock just now! It's been years since I'd looked at the
Black List. What a list!!! 598 US entries and another 175 or so Canadian
ones! I don't know how many we had at my last visit, but nowhere near that
many! Thank all of you for "volunteering"!

Beyond that, I had a frustrating experience: I was going to pare the
spreadsheet to names & addresses only to make it easy to put them into a
Google map. That part went easy, and deleting the blank lines where state
names dropped out was only laborious. BUT, I was working in Open Office
rather than Excel. :-( When I attempted to save my work, I got a fatal
error and lost it all! :-((

Maybe I'll try again some day! Now I remember why I re-retired 25 years
ago!

Ken,
You thought you retired, but really you graduated to another one, non
paying job.
I’m glad your doing a banged up non paying job and staying healthy.
People like you are what keeps the GMC and the community rolling.

OO stores a back up copy as you go along. It is done automatically every xx minutes. I forget where it is stored.

To save recovery information automatically every n minutes
1. Choose Tools - Options - Load/Save - General.
2. Mark Save AutoRecovery information every and select the time
interval.

Check and see if yours is turned on

Thanks, Ken. It turns out that option WAS turned on -- by default
apparently, 'cause I never knew it was available. But there's no sign of a
backup of my work -- nor even that I ever opened the Black List! Strange.

Thanks anyway.

At https://www.gmcmi.com/black-list/ there's a link to BatchGEO that used to open a Google Map. It worked a few months ago but is broken now. I just
sent an email to Kim Weeks, the admin for the site, to see if she can look into it when she gets a chance. I've heard she's very busy right now
getting ready for the Mansfield convention.

Thanks, Christo. I'd also found that broken link. I've got an OLD Black
List map; I don't know whether it's one I someone else generated, but
thought I'd make a new one.

Yep, I'm sure Kim's very busy. With all the publishing she's doing these
days, I don't see how she has time to even THINK about rallies...

I know Kim is very busy right now so I just take whatever assignment she asks me to get done and do it without bothering her.

Hey Colonel Sir, (Ken H.)

I finally found it. It is in a directory called "backups" and about 5 directories deep.

Open OO
Go to "tools"
Go to "options"
Go to "OpenOffice"
Go to "paths"
Go to "backups"

I found a .bak file for my current windshield spreadsheet there. Hopefully you will find yours there too. It only took me almost a week to find it.

Ken,

Thanks a bunch for all your efforts! But, apparently I screwed up long ago
-- didn't set a backup location: When I followed your instructions, I
wound up with ".../backups" presenting me with a complete directory tree,
apparently to allow me to select a location for my *.bak files. Since I'd
never done that, OO didn't know where to put them -- and didn't. :-(

You'd think that after all these years we'd have learned to love computers
& software, wouldn't you? ...NOT!

Thanks anyway,

Ken H.
