Well, the trip home didn't go quite as planned: At about 5PM yesterday, 120
miles from home, the water temperature shot up to 150*. With the oil temp
& pressure looking normal, I continued 1/4 mile to a car wash. There I
sprayed the radiator to clear the steam. Examination showed the water
pump's serpentine belt loose & slipping. After tightening that I checked
the fan clutch to be OK and refilled the radiator. When I started the
engine there was an intermittent squeal which I chalked up to the we belt.
So we headed home.

About 8 miles later, the water temp shot up again and the oil temperature
also started climbing. I turned onto the next cross road to clear the
4-lane heavy traffic and shut down on the shoulder of the road.

The serpentine for the WP was missing, so I dug out the spare. Then I
found the original hanging loose, so reinstalled it. Turned out, it was so
damaged and stretched that I couldn't tighten it. So, I cut it off and
installed the spare, with the same part number. It was also too loose to
tighten! Baffled, I started installing the other spare, marked "1/2 in too
short". When it quickly proved to also be too loose, I finally shook the
fan again, it was VERY loose - shot WP. It was also covered with oil,
source still unknown.

With roadside repair out of the question a I called RVRoadHelp. After
about 3 hours and 4 operators, I finally had them convinced that "Beaver
Racing Engines" in Americus is the closes CAPABLE repair facility - they
refuse to take me home, which is 3 miles closer (and where I intend to
land). Then the fun began:. After contacting MANY tower who refused the
job, they called the local police to come to me, expecting them to find
someone local.

After the police dispatcher tried 16 different services, without luck, the
cop and I backed the GMC onto flat ground for the night. And there we
slept.

This morning I dumped the problem back on Allstate, with a couple of
suggestions from the tower in Americus. After another 45 minutes with me
holding the phone, they found someone 75 miles away. He just called,
saying he'll head this way as soon as he get gas. He should be here at
about 11. We MAY be home by 3:30 PM EDT.

Keep your fingers crossed for us.

Call if you're still stuck this evening. Anybody with a Holmes 500 wrecker with a wheel lift can pull a 26' easily, much less a 23'. Ask me how I
know this. I was lucky when my 26' ate the water pump, there was a qualified fixit shop at the next exit. R-D's in Gastonia.

The wrecker finally showed up at about 11:15 and we were on the road by
11:45. It was a medium-sized wheel-lift (21,000# MGW) and the very nice
driver was well experienced. I led at the speed limit for the entire 104
miles (to "Henderson's Garage" -- don't tell anyone) instead of the
forecast 107 to Beaver Racing Engines. The coach is on the rack and
completely unloaded (about 25 loads to the house). So, maybe by Monday
I'll find the round tuit needed to tear into it and try to fix it. The oil
leak is my big concern -- the idea that comes to mind is that running with
the bad water pump could have allowed it to wear through the sheet metal
base plate into the cam chain compartment. If that bad idea comes true, at
least apparently water didn't get into the crankcase because the dipstick
looks good after a couple of short repositioning engine runs. We shall
see. I've got until the 17th of this month to get in running again so I
can take her to a garden club event at Pine Mountain, GA.

Hope the fix is easier than you think. Good luck! At least you've got a
better place than most to work on it.

Sorry to hear about the breakdown. I hope the issue turns out to be an easy fix. Glad y'all are home safe!

Brilliant!

So when you got home you told the wrecker driver; "sorry, I have CRS and
drove home because I forgot where I was going." :-)

Hopefully it will be just the water pump and not the plate as well. IIRC
those plates are fairly thick.

Sorry to see the issue with your water pump. Just a reminder...there are 2 water pumps for that motor. The two belt pump and the single belt pump. I
don't know what your clearance issues are with a serpentine system, but you may need the 2 belt system pump for the serpentine to clear the water
inlet. Check this.

I do have some 500 parts, so if you need something, call me.

Good luck with it.

Good luck with the repair. With some of the problems you have had, if you don't have to R&R the engine, you will be ahead of the game.

Ken,

CadCo has a SS replacement for that front plate.
If I ever manage to build another engine, I'll buy one.

Thanks, Gary, I may have to use that. Because of time constraints, I may
have to move the one from my now-disassembled '76 if this one is damaged.
In that case I'll get the SS to reassemble the '76.
