bearings

Where do I purchase and what Front Wheel Bearings do I need?

Cinnibar and Gateway sell 'matched' sets of Timken wheel bearings. These
include a spacer ring that installs between the two cones whose thickness
dictates the assembled axial clearance of .0095". The bearings will have
this hand etched on the spacer. They cost about $80 per set including
inner and outer seals. (CAUTION: Do not mix these bearing parts with any
others as this will change the clearances.)
Why is that important you ask? Good question. The outside of the hub
should measure from 2.0015" to 2.0020". The inside diameter of the bearing
that I have, measures 1.970". If I were to press that bearing on a hub
with maximum outside dimension of 2.0020" there would be a.032"
interference fit. Thats pretty tight and would reduce the axial clearance
of the bearing by some amount. How much? I don't really know, however the
cinnabar engineers have run tests on the various bearings with maximum and
minimum dimensions for both the hub, knuckle and bearing and decided that
in the worst case of each, an axial clearance of .0095" is the minimum
clearance that can be safely used.

What about rear bearings and seals?

Checker had all the parts in stock and were cheaper than AutoZone. They
carried Chicago Rawhide (CR) which is an old line US manufacturer. When
you look closely at the inside bearings you see "Mexico" on them!! The

Am I then to infer that the Timken is the only one made with the proper
clearances? Is the part no. the same as for the similar year Toronado,
or does this cross reference not work in this case? Is Cinnabar the
only place this is available? Darren

Hi All,
I just bought the bearings at a local bearing house, Jamaica Bearing in New
Hyde Park , New York. I paid $140.58 for two sets plus the four seals . I
picked them up.
This is for the Timken #23 set with the correct .0095 axial clearance
inscribed and Chicago Rawhide seals.
They special ordered took two weeks. I would imagine any large bearing house
would match price. Found them in the Yellow Pages.

I'm still wondering about how many people with the Warner Puller are having
a rough time pulling the bearings? That is with the first 15 5 3/16 models
or the 5 3/4 one. I still have not found a hydraulic jack slim enough, or
able to be easily modified to fit the
3 3/8 space requirement, a 1 1/2 ton model was also too large. Any feedback
from users?

I'll have to admit I'm getting a little concerned now. I have the smaller model
of puller and I've gone through several sources (including Sears, the local
cheap tool store, my garage and my neighbor's) and there are no jacks that will
fit inside the space provided on the puller I have. To be honest, I don't think
a jack narrow enough to fit is available . Therefore I'll have to use what I
bought as is.

I've not used mine yet for its intended purpose and therefore have no idea of
how much force is actually required to pull the bearings out. It was my
understanding that the puller was a brute (even the first version) and that it
would get any bearing out. That remains to be seen by me, but I am hopeful that
my setup will work as advertised. Otherwise my wife's going to get the last
laugh :^)

Mark,

I wouldn't say I had a rough time pulling the bearings off the hubs, my arms
were sore the next day, though!
I had the hub bolted to a wheel, sprayed penetrating oil around the inner
race, used a long-handle 1/2" ratchet to turn the forcing screw. I think the
key is to keep the forcing screw and washer well lubricated. It took quite a
bit of force to get the bearing to move, but the Tom Warner bearing puller
and the OTC 927 are strong enough to handle it. The bearings had been on the
hubs for 10 years / 25k miles.

Good luck,

I'm not sure on this, Darren, but I think that Timken is the only one that
makes the pre-load .0095" spacer. You can get the set it at any bearing
house though.

Cinnibar wasn't too far out of line on this part. Just a little more
expensive to get it all in one kit that includes the needed seals.

Thanks Dave. I needed that. If you need to use my puller just let me know.

Thank you sir. Now I have to phone someone else tomorrow. The list just
gets longer and longer. Hey Dave, you need the puller? Better yet, you
want to use the puller to do my bearings? ;-) Darren

Darren.
I purchased the bearings and seals at "Bearing and Transmission" here
in Regina, SK. this spring. There is a Bearing and Transmission outlet
in Calgary according to the Calgary phonebook I have.

The set-23 bearings were $42.00 each
#24888 c/r seal were $12.44 each
#25515 C/R seal were $8.73 each
All in CDN. funds! $126.34 for two sides plus tax.
Give them a try.
Regards, Gil

I was actually hoping to practice on your coach before tackling mine. Oh well.
I'll be doing mine in July. I'll let you know. Maybe Gary can come down and make
it a threesome. Darren

Hi Darren

I just ordered a set of Timken bearings from Transmission Supply on 42Ave at
Manhatten Road. Cost for Timken Set 23 with .0095 spacer was $55.00
Canadian. The seals were $31.00Can from Mickelsen. Total cost per wheel
$81.00 or about $57.00US.

I would rather train local suppliers to supply these generic parts than have
to air-express stuff in from the US. The added advantage is that it cost
MUCH less. I will let Cinnabar handle the GMC specific parts.

Hi
Gil should go into business selling bearing kits. His price is 1/2 what the
going rate is in the US.

Sorry Darren but Tom scared me into buying a puller by saying they were
going out of production. I assumed they would become valuable so I ordered
one for myself ;-). I intend to keep it in a nice aluminum case just like
Chuck does, it worth a trip to Post Falls just to see his coach and puller.

Let me know when you are going to do yours and I will come and watch.
Seriously! We can use one of your wheels for a vise, my aluminum wheels
might get grease stains on them. I foolishly gave my last steel wheel to
George Braun in Kelowna, I completely forgot I could use it to hold the hub
while I worked on the bearings.

Have you got your grease yet? The Husky (Mobil) wholesaler is just off
Blackfoot Trail near the Cushing bridge.
