Battery tray

Claude, the tray fits in the compartment beautifully and I did take out
the aluminum cover as it does help to have that there anyway. The tray
holds the two golf cart batteries and there is still room on top. The
tray is metal and has sides and bolts on the end to fasten down the
batteries. The tray is on roller bearings and they are strong enough to
let the entire tray come out and still be able to see the back water fill
opening. I tried the ragusa but, as you said, it doesn't come out all
the way. The Stevensen comes from trailer trays they sell. It comes out
all the way, and then when it is in it can be locked in place. The lock
is a slide pin like you see many other applications. I do not have the
coach here as it is being checked out by the guy who did my engine. He
wanted to get everything checked out before we leave again (next week).
Sorry, I don't have a picture but you can picture the opening and a tray
sitting in that area. Maybe Gene can take a picture of his and then you
can see what it looks like.

Al,
Thanks for passing that info on to me. I'll give them a
call tomorrow.

Richard,
Could you please pass on what you find out. Size etc.

You could also pass on that there is at least one more fish nibbling at the
bait.
My possible problem is that I don't have the full width of an 8D anymore but
ample room for the 2 golf carts (batteries) I have in there now.

Thanks.

The tray I made will hold a 4D. Are two 6 volt batteries the same or
smaller? Will they fit in the same space? The tray I have is 22" long
and 9" wide. It fits in the rear compartment beside the genset. OEM
location. ( for my coach any way ) I might have to move the ground
of the rear battery, but I am not sure yet. If any one is interested I
can supply pics. in the next couple of days. I do have to work
sometimes. I can have a price ready by then also. I know it will be
cheaper than the Ragusa tray. The slides I used are full extension
slides from a company called Hettich. They will hold 120# at full
extension. There are heavier duty slides available from the same
company. Up to 350# is not a problem, but they do increase the price
significantly. I should have been spending more time on the battery tray
and less time on the engine cover, I guess.
The tray is made of 1/8th aluminum. The maintenance on the slides would
be simple. Just spray with silicone spray a couple of times a year. More
if you live in a high corrosion zone.

Darren,
My golf's are 10" long and 7" wide. (20"+ x 7" in use)
If outside dimension of the tray is 9" I can just barely squeeze it in but
would maybe have to reroute the cables some. Doable but 8 to 8 1/2 inch
width would be better :-)

I seem to recall that you are in Calgary... is that correct?

Heinz

The width is not a problem. To get a 7" width the outside dimension would be
7" + 1/2" + 1/2" + ( 4 x 1/8" ) or 8 1/2". Mine ended up as wide as it did
because I didn't check my measurements close enough. I will not make that
mistake in the future. The bottom of the battery is, I believe, 1 1/2 " off
the plywood. This could be a little lower. Yes I am in Calgary. Darren

I fabricated a battery tray from a piece of treated wood, about 1 inch thick, cut
to fit the battery compartment. I then drilled four 3/4 inch holes, one near each
corner, and 1 midway from front to back along each side. Then I placed nylon slide
buttons into each hole. To support the tray when pulled out, I cut a piece of 1x2
long enough to reach from the bottom of the tray to ground which I place under the
tray after pulling it out. To compensate for varying ground to tray height, I made
this 1x2 in 2 pieces & drilled matching holes in each piece. I place a wooden peg
in the appropriate holes to adjust height. Total cost -- $7.

Is aluminum a good material for a battery tray? I place a piece of aluminum
stock in my battery compartment to act as a sacrificial anode. It does a
great job of destroying itself.

The last tray I had was made of steel It did a great job of rusting completely
away. There are always alternatives. As long as you keep the compartment clean,
I think it will all work well. If you get Battery acid on anything it will
eventually disintegrate. Aluminum is easy to work with, is light and sure looks
nice. Stainless is an alternative but at three times the cost would it be worth
it? Would any one want to pay $300.00 for a battery tray? If so, I can make it
out of stainless too. Darren

Al-

Would you give us the outside dimensions of the tray-- how wide and
long is it and how high off the floor of the vehicle does the battery
sit in the tray?
I have a Ragusa one and it is OK-neat, clean design,- except the tray
does not slide out all the way, and as has been mentioned there is not
extra room above the bat. terminals. I have to be careful when undoing
the nuts not to have my metal watch band on, and not to touch the box
end wrench on the wrong terminal. Each time i do it I keep telling
myself I should get a cheap box end and dip the one end in liquid
rubber/plastic so it could not arc if I accidently happen to cross
touch terminals. My secret fantasy is that some day when in a hurry or
being careless, I'll frazzle my arm in side the battery box!!

Mine slid just fine for the first year. Then dust got into the tape. And
the damned thing wouldn't come all the way out. To be fair - it didn't
budge more than3-4 inches. Couldn't get at the FIRST battery much less the
second. Had to use crowbars, screwdrivers and all the words my mom taught
me while she did wallpapering.

I wouldn't wish that thing on my worst enemy.
