Ball Park # for Carpet and Upholstery

First off, Hello to all and Happy New Year! :) I wish everyone much health and happiness in 2021.

On the main topic, can anyone throw me in the ball park on the cost of carpet and new upholstery. I have a 1977 Birchaven rear bath.

when I did my palm beach, I bet I had ended up near $1000 in material for the upholstery job. foam was a big expense, as was the material. But
the little things added up plenty... I would say 25% of that cost??things like hog ring pliers, spray adhesive, staples, ect...

Mike Teets was the savior. maybe not for a birchaven, but he had all the things figured out for me(or maybe I should say for my mother-in-law).

as for the carpet- I can't remember for sure, but a guess is $300. you can buy remnants pretty cheap, the larger cost ends up in what padding you
want to use. I had chosen the most expensive padding. FWIW I am no longer a fan of carpet, and that is the first job for the spring... tear it up
and install a hard flooring. (but I have said that for a few years now!- carpet looked good for maybe 3 summers) I can see carpet as a good option
if you never park on dirt/grass, but most of my camping seems to be not on clean ground, and it seems to rain plenty, so we just tracked up the
carpet in short order. a 23' Birch probably better for carpet then my 26' palm beach. Everytime I get in and out of my coach, I track in dirt.
gas stations with the oily ground, and just plain in and out working on the engine, ect... Unlike my house, I don't have a good entry spot to take
off my shoes all the time, and I like to drive with shoes on.

When I went to have mine recarpeted, I got two bids. Both were in excess of $1500. I thought...carpeting can't be that hard, so I bought best quality
carpeting I could get and installed myself saving about $1000. Installing carpet is not that hard. I put a sound absorbing material down under the
carpet called HUSHMATT. Can't believe the difference it made. Now we can talk to each other in a normal tone of voice. As for the upholstery, I
swapped out the cockpit seats for Honda Odyssey seats ... $150 for both. Then had the dinette done by a local upholstery person. Paid to much for a
so...so...job. As for the dash, the upholster said it would be easier and nicer if I took the dash out. So, I did. BIG mistake. At 40yrs old plastic,
it came out in about 50 pieces. every time I bent it a little or bumped into something, plink...crack, crunch. I ended up buying a new fiberglass and
had lots of trouble installing/fitting it. Don't take the dash out. Get a dash cover from one of the vendors or do a Mac Dash. A lot less money, a
lot less trouble. JWIT

I just had my dinette and couch/bunks reupholstered. Believe it was about $5k all in.

Thanks for the tip on the HUSHMAT Larry. I've already done the carpet but used green pad which has not been particularly satisfactory. Namely
deconstructing itself by the step where I get access to the engine. Not so good on soundproofing either. Did you use any other pad over/under the
HUSHMAT or install carpet directly over it?

Doug,
I put the carpet directly over the Hushmatt. The Hushmatt is about 1/4" thick with an adhesive backing. Cut it to the right size/shape, peel and
stick. Pretty darn easy to use. Happy New Year to ya Doug.

Thank you very much! I will use the Hushmat. My wife grew up in Korea and literally had a real dirt floor. We don't wear shoes inside and she loves
carpet for obvious reasons. She can feel ant hairs under her feet and is constantly wiping up the floor. I liked the noise deadening effect of carpet.
The hush mat may make it even better. :)

I believe the numbers provided will assist in the decision process. The Birchaven just has the Dinette, Bunk bed and a lot of miscellaneous items in
the coach. I think a little less then the 26'ers.

Larry, are you happy with the Honda Odyssey Seats? I have to decide to re-upholster the original seats, the Flexsteel seats or get possible Honda
seats?
 
We have a combination of carpet and bamboo hardwood floors. The captains
and co-captains area and the dinette as well as the sloped area in the rear
is carpet, with pet-proof foam underlayment. It is water resistant and much
quieter. The entry, bathroom and cooking area is bamboo. Easily cleaned.
Just what we did. Carpet was a remnant, a carpet layer friend installed it
for traded labor. I did the bamboo floor. It was a close out at Lowes.
$100.00 or less. Baseboard, etc was particle board, stained to match the
bamboo.
Upholstery was close out from an online company in Kansas. New
Toto.com. Near match to OEM. Another friend who owns an Upholstery Shop did
all the interior stuff for $2500.00 labor. A hell of a lot of work.
Included a new center mattress to go between the gauchos, and both bunks,
the dinette, and both drivers and passengers seats. Looked brand new when
she was finished. You can save $$$ by doing as much of the work as you are
capable of yourself.

Very happy with the Odyssey seats. Very easy to install. Look in the GMC Photo Archive and do a search for "Odyssey". There are a couple of people
who have documented the process.
