Balancing Wheels

Does anyone know of someplace in Michigan that can properly balance the
steel wheels on a GMC motorhome?

I have been having problems with low level vibration between 55 and 65mph.
After having the wheels balanced twice I tried new shocks but still no luck.

I called Wes Caughlan and his advice was switch to Alcoas or find someone
who knows what they are doing with a wheel balancer. Since my 16.5's are
relatively new it will probably be a while before I change wheels. Wes
could not tell me of a good source for wheel balancing here in Michigan. I
will admit that I am surprised that Cinnabars shop in Sandusky does not
balance wheels but they don't...

If you have had a good experience with getting your steel wheels balanced
here in Michigan, please let me know where you had the work done.

TIA,

Dave:

If you have the back issue's of Cinnabar's newsletter, Wes had an article on
a balancing machine, Cyberdyne or something like that he recommended. I
called the company and tried to locate one in the Grand Rapids area, but
didn't pursue it. Subsequently, I changed to Alcoa wheels.

If you don't have the back issue's to get the info, let me know and I'll
look it up after I get home from work.

P. S. Where are you in MI?? I'm in Kalamazoo.

Yes, he mentioned that. I don't remember seeing it but I don't always have
time to read the articles. I will look through my files and see if I can
find that issue.

Thanks for the offer, I would appreciate that.

I am just a bit west of Ann Arbor.

I had the same problem on my '73 Painted Desert -- I
had the tires "TRUED" -- there were taken off the GMC
and put on a machine that shaved the tires until they
were perfectly round-- they had to be still warm from
a good ride - before they would do it-- WORKED GREAT
no more vibration.

I understand that some Truck places can do it with the
tire still mounted on the GMC.

Because we have in-line rear tires and have them tied
to a common bogie -- any wobble in the rear tire set
is magnified by the GMC.

Dave,
I still feel you should persue finding someone with a "off the vehicle"
tire truer. I have been truing tires on GMC's for several years and
everyone has told me it made a marked improvement. I make a point to get a
report to be sure my work was good.

True, the process is compensating somewhat for the irregularities in the
steel rim and Alcoa rims are made to a tighter tollerance but I have trued
new tires on Alcoa rims and have found the process improved even that set up.

With the 80,000 wheel recall Alcoa is campaigning right now, it may be some
time until new rims are available for sale. Truing and static balancing is
your shortest trip to a smooth ride.

Call if you have any other questions,

Jim Bounds

I had Jim Bounds true and static balance my Goodyear G159 tires and Alcoa
rims. It made a world of difference. I would recommend that it be done by
everyone that wants a smooth ride. I would recommend that you be careful as
to who you get to do the procedure. Jim's man that did the work on our
wheels was very careful to remove only the minimum amount of rubber needed
to true the assembles.
