Backfiring

If that is what you found when you took the cover off, it is likely that the lifter is also popped out of the bore and laying in the lifter valley.
That means you have no oil pressure. Do not try to run the engine like that. At a minimum, you will have to pull the intake manifold, put in new
lifter and pushrods. I see the pushrods are missing the round ends. Hopefully, you will find them in the lifter valley. If not they may have made
their way to the bottom of the pan. Reassemble, then start it and see if you have good oil pressure. If you do, you will have to IMMEDIATELY up the
idle to 2K rpm and do a lifter/cam break-in on those new lifters. Carefully watch the oil pressure on this. Now change the oil and drive for 1000
miles or so watching the oil pressure and listening for unusual noises, change the oil again this time taking an oil sample for analysis. If you have
high numbers of iron and/or copper, you are probably looking at a rebuild. In addition, you are going to have to figure out why that rocker arm got
that way, so look things over during reassembly....maybe even just replace those two rockers. Let us know what you find when you lift the intake.
I've been where you are...not fun.

I'm moving at the end of the month(29th), and i plan on moving it at the same time to my new place (probably the 31st), giving me 1 day headway on
when i have to be out of where i'm living and out of storage both on the first of the year.

so in the meantime, I added RV coverage to my AAA plus and plan on using it in 3 weeks to get it towed back.

then after the start of the new year i'll be able to start working on it again, i'll start by removing the intake manifold to inspect that lifter to
see if it's collapsed, or whatever is happened to it, or if the issue is with the cam shaft ....

I'm EXCITED though i'll finally have a place i can work on it to start doing the things i want to do...

Thanks David

Ouch.
Was the tip on the short rod worn off? Which end?
Olds pushrods are suposed to be all the same length arent they?

The Roller rocker wasnt the issue. The roller and volve tip look OK. That type of polylock is better than stock. I have runt those rockers for
thousands of miles without issues.I wouldnt hesitate to use them.

It looks to me like "All bets are off", the engine has a different
camshaft, lifters, push rods, valves, springs, retainers, rocker studs and
rockers. It is no surprise to me to see the bent and broken parts. It is
what happens when a bunch of pieces are assembled on an engine that come
from several different places. I would be amazed to find anything
salvageable. Who ever gets the task of sorting this one out has my sympathy.
